I think everyone is kidding themselves if they think Ponting will not be there in Sydney unless injured. I saw Ian Chappell on TV this morning and he said that Ponting is dreadfully out of form but has carried the side for the past few years which probably hid the fact that our batting stocks are quite weak. When Ponting makes runs then Australia look good but unfortunately he hasn't looked like doing that this season.
I still believe he has a place in the side but needs to put the ego away and step down the list to number 6. Clarke is my worry as he is the so called next captain but the bloke has been in the system long enough where he should be taking over the Ponting role and stepping up making consistent big scores but the bloke still can't play outright quicks bowling short or even genuine seamers.
My side for Sydney:
1. Katich (back from injury and is all grunt and fights for his wicket which we have lacked in the top 5 of late)
2. Hughes (Must persist, looked good in the 2nd dig but needs the confidence of knowing that his spots not on a knife edge}
3. Khwahja (Give him a crack on home turf. Only batsmen really any close to putting up is hand in SS)
4. Watson (Been good at opening but doesn't go on to make big scores, down the list may release the pressure for him)
5. Hussey (Solid for most of the serious and probably the most reliable batsmen in the batting order)
6. Ponting (Still think he has the ability to play at this level but needs to bat down the list, an on song Ponting at 6 = Scary)
7. Haddin (Like the way he bats and probably warrants to go up the list but that oftens back fires, leave him at 7)
8. Smith (Very much like Hughes, persist with him thats the only way these guys will get any good. needs to bowl more)
9. Johnson (X-factor yes, but it is time he stands up and is more consistent with the ball)
10. Siddle (The work horse of the team. Just wants to play, not always the best but always tries his hardest and gives a shit)
11. Swan (Leading wicket taker or close to in the SS deserve the opportunity to have a crack. Left field selecton but is a wicket taker and we do need that)

These guys are not up to it yet, will get smashed and risk the possibility of never recovering ala Mcgain in SAF. I dont propose to have any sort of squad for the next test match but matchwinners in their own right such as Dan Christian, George Bailey, Cossie would be a better bet then the young potential stars who aren't yet ready.

You do realise McGain was 37 at the time?

Am I and REB the only people in this country that rate Copeland and Cameron ?????????

And please, get rid of the Ferg bias.

His record doesnt deserve consideration.

Reports are coming out that Greg Chappell suggested to Ponting before the GABBA test that he should drop down the order so they could select Khawaja at 3.

WTF

Amazing how much power the AUS cricket captain has.

he either looks after himself or his mates.

Time for the captain to have less influence maybe

Ponting going to 4 would be like moving deck chairs on the Titanic.
You can't hide in test cricket anymore, you will face the new ball, reverse swing and spinners at some stage.
Teams do their homework and play a lot smarter now.
For every one I miss I am closer to a hole in one.

If true, is that a legacy of our successful era? Previous captains, even Ponting in his first few years as skipper, had the luxury of great success to lean on arnd selectors were able to hand over some powers that should have been grabbed back at some point. He wouldn't know how to handle this properly given it didn't matter what he did in the past.

Not sure how long iv been saying Copeland should be in the NSW ahead of most of the other quicks. I was shut down earlier this summer about Saying Copeland should be in the nsw sidd ahead of Cameron.

Also agree with ferg not playing but picking him now in the hope of him improving more so in the test arena

I think Katich is still injuried so Hughes will survive.

I would have liked to see Shaun Marsh get an opportunity to see what he could do at Test Level.

Disappointing for Punter, it may be his last test in Australia but lets hope not! One of the worlds best ever cricketers and doesn’t deserve to leave the game like this!

My team for Sydney would be:

Watson
Hughes
Khawaja
Clarke
Hussey
Ferguson
Haddin
Smith
Johnson
Siddle
Bollinger/McKay

He deserves much better than that and deserves the chance to go out on his own terms. How quickly people forget what the bloke has done for cricket in this country. The best batsman we've produced since Bradman and an absolute superstar of the game. We have been spoilt to have lived in an era where we got to see Warne, McGrath and Ponting go about their work yet people worship two of those and take every opportunity to lay the boot into Ponting. People have labelled him selfish and suggested he puts himself before the team. A bigger load of crap i have never heard. I hope to see Ricky back as soon as possible.

The captain should have every right to say the batting order he wants. He makes all the calls out in the middle and should have the tools that he wants/needs at his disposal to live and die by.

The selectors should have selected Khawaja instead of Hussey or North in that First Test (hindsight suggests North) if they wanted him in the side that badly. They could have batted him at 5 or 6. Ponting himself started at number 6.

I do wonder whether CA have suggested he miss this game to check out Clarke's captaincy abilities. I think it would prove inconclusive though as it's a semi-dead rubber and Clarke's record at the SCG is very good.

I don't think too much will change, especially now Punter is out. The selectors are always very conservative.
LIKELY
Hughes
Watto
Khawaja
Clarke
Hussey
Haddin
Smith
Johnson
Siddle
Beer
Hilfenhaus

MINE
Hughes
Watto
Khawaja
Clarke
Hussey
Ferguson*
Haddin
Johnson
Hauritz
Siddle
Cameron**

Others I'd consider as I am SA bias.
*Cosgrove, Lynn & S.Marsh are all averaging over 50 in Shield cricket.
**Swan, Butterworth, Copeland and Faulkner have been taking wickets at exceptional averages.

With the group of pillicks we have at the helm nothing surprises me mate. It's a friggin pinky for crying out loud. I chopped the end of my finger off on the Friday and still rocked up Saturday incase I needed to bat, and that was only B Grade district.
