Redbacks clean sweep group stage at CLT20

The South Australia Redbacks have finished the group stage of the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 tournament undefeated after beating Guyana by 15 runs at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

Captain Michael Klinger lost his fourth straight toss and his side was asked to bat first, amassing an imposing 6-191 before Guyana put up a good chase, led by their captain Ramnaresh Sarwan (70), before falling 15 short of their target at 7-176.

After the game, Klinger said he was pleased his side could go through the group stage unblemished and was looking forward to a challenging semi-final on Saturday.

“It was certainly nice to come away with the win and although it probably wasn’t in the fashion we would have liked, it is a fantastic achievement to go through our pool matches without losing and we’ll certainly take that confidence into the semi-final,” Klinger said.

“I’m not sure many people tipped us to be 4-0 at this stage and that’s a great result but we have some more work to do before Saturday and I know everyone in the squad is looking forward to that challenge.

“Credit to Guyana, they came out and played good cricket and took us to task and Sarwan batted beautifully.”

Earlier, the South Australian innings got off with a bit of a hiccup when they slipped to 3-41, losing some in-form players at the top of innings before the middle and lower order lifted the score.

Callum Ferguson finished as man of the match with 55 and he received good support from Cameron Borgas (48) and Dan Christian (23), while Klinger (16) retained the mantle of leading run-scorer in the tournament.

“Although we lost a couple of early wickets it was a great opportunity for the guys in our middle order to spend some time in the middle and they really made the most of that on a good batting pitch,” Klinger said.

“Both Ferg and Borgie struck the ball well and guided us to that big total and that partnership proved to be the difference.”

Klinger noted the Redbacks could improve with the ball but was pleased with the way his bowlers fought it out and said the team was already looking forward to Saturday.

Dan Christian’s two wickets were enough to ensure he took back the honour of the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, while medium-pacer Dan Harris chipped in with 3-33 with a further wicket each to Aaron O’Brien and Jake Haberfield.

“We probably didn’t field to the high standard we have set in the tournament so far but we know we can improve and we’ll work on that over the coming days in the lead-up to the semi,” Klinger said.

“I know how excited the group is to have come this far and we’re going to ready for the challenge on Saturday evening.”

The Redbacks will have a rest day tomorrow before training on Thursday and Friday ahead of Friday’s semi-final at Centurion, with their opponent still to be determined.

Surely Manou must go back to 7 or 8 and Tait to come in for Bailey.

IMO Bailey may have played his last 20/20 game for quite some time. Dont expect him to get a game during the Aussie summer when Georgey and 2 imports are included in our team. For mine he lacks one of the key fundemental in his spin bowling. The ability to spin the ball

Spinning the ball is over rated apparently... See N Hauritz in the Australian team

Yes it is, if Chennai wins, they will be 1st and we will play the Warriors. If Chennai have a massive win, then we will be playing Victoria and the Warriors will miss out. If the Warriors win, we will be playing Victoria.

Unfortunately we are a top order batter short for Manou to drop down the list, Fergi, Borgas and Cooper has been outstanding from limited opportunities, I really don't think they will upset the balance they currently have in an important semi. If they could have taken snow man, which obviously they couldn't, althought believe he could of played for Victoria over there, he would come in for Bailey, anyway theory only.
Wristy, bit hard on Bailey, the way they set the pitches up for these games are tailor made for runs, runs and more runs, Warney would only turn it a foot on these, so Bailey on hiding to nothing. I think if they had another batter over there they might change, but as it stands, only bowlers missing out I think, unless they bring in Luderman, but think Bailey better value.

Maybe a bit harsh but for someone who a few years ago was billed to be genuine star in the making and given an ACB contract at a very young age he has been nothing but a huge dissapointment. Have a mate who plays grade cricket against him who doesnt rate him at all. I would love for him to prove me wrong as he is a croweater but i havent seen him worry a batsmen in a long time. I agree that he is obviously much more suited to Shield Cricket. I dont think he will play the Semi IMO!

I dont think he should play.
Tait In - Bailey Out

O'Brien has outbowled him in every match, plus we have Harris as a sixth bowler
