Boof on Rod Marsh

" As a player I loved him."
" As a...our views differ on how to manage a cricket team."

Perhaps a """"Crusade.""" ....

He also caught the ball to complete the World Cup final in 2003, IIRC.

This is where the whole hookes/lehmann argument sits.
Considering Hookes pretty much instigated the new attacking brand of batting in test cricket, i believe hookes shaped Darren into the player he has been.
It's interesting to note that while you can claim bowlers were better in Clem Hill's time, what was the standard of the bowlers when Bradman avergaed 99.04??
Where they THAT piss poor?
No.
Bradman was that good.
Whether your opposition is craphouse or not i find it irrelevant, making one 200 against bangladesh needs luck, to average 99.04, or 45 or whatever, is a reflection of how good you were, how patient and focussed you were, for a solid period of time.
This is where Lehmann shades Hookes IMHO.
He was dashing and daring but consistent, Hookes was dashing, daring, spectacular, just not as consistent as Lehmann.
Averaging 45 in Test Cricket is no mean feat, i think you have to respect that, no matter what era you play in.

At the completion of the Pura Cup match starting on Friday (assuming it goes for 4 days), it will be 14 days short of 20 years since Darren Scott Lehmann made his First Class debut in Melbourne. And while he was unfairly treated by the Test Selectors - he has been an SA Legend, a member of two Sheffield Shield winning sides, and two winning World Cup sides.

He was/still is a favourite of mine, the casual batting style (which has been his undoing at times) is a trait I enjoyed because he made it look easy. He also mastered Murali in Sri Lanka; one of the best players of spin in the world. His bowling too, very underrated, quite economical in the one dayers; at school the term "Darren Lehmann hand grenade" was used to describe the ball landing at the batsmans feet. If you look at his averages in both Tests and One Dayers for bowling, you might be a bit surprised - 27.46 in Tests and 27.78 for ODIs.

I seriously doubt this season will get any better without him; but even if it does, he will be missed. Congratulations on a wonderful career, Boof.

Wasn't there a pretty good batsman who played for Australia from 1928-1948 who scored fairly quickly

I could also throw in some other names from Hookesy's era like Sir Vivian Richards, David Gower, CLive Lloyd who also did more than play a straight bat

No disrespect intended to the late, great David Hookes .... just trying to find some perspective here along with my ol mate .... :D
In between signatures .....

A champion of South Australian cricket. Always would be glued to the tv if Lehmann was batting and when at the ground there was always a feeling we'd win (or could win) when Boof was at the crease. Great for the game of cricket and I reckon he'll make a significant contribution to the game in his non-playing days.

Hopefully this now signals the time for Cosgrove to step up and become a consistently dominant first class batsman like Lehmann has been. SA cricket needs it!
