Looking at players to have scored more than 3000 test runs since 1 jan 2007, Ponting has
- Lowest batting average
- Least centuries
- 2nd most ducks (Hussey has 10)

how many batsman scored over 3000, 2000 runs would be better. 39 would be close to an average test average

Was that loss the match against England in 1999/00 where Cronje and Hussain agreed to forfeit an innings each to achieve a result?

17 batsmen scores 3000+ runs in that period

33 batsmen score 2000+ runs in that period.

That actually makes Ponting look WORSE....
He has the 3rd lowest batting average of the 33 (only two lower, Haddin 36.18, McCullum 38.03

Century and 5wi

- Shakib Al Hasan became just the 21st player (28th occasion) to score a century and take five wickets in an innings in the same test, in the 2nd Test v Pakistan.
- Last player to achieve this was R Ashwin (India) only last month against the West Indies.
- Ian Botham is the only player to have achieved this more than twice, he was able to do it five times.

Some interesting stats around Ponting and his last 47 Tests. Did an interesting comparison recently between a few of our batsman. Between 30/11/2008 - 30/11/2011 :

Hussey – 14x 50’s & 6x tons
Watson - 15x 50’s & 2x tons
Clarke - 11x 50’s & 8x tons
Ponting - 15x 50’s & 3x tons

Interestingly (well, I thought it was), Mark Taylor’s stats leading up to his ‘career-saving’ ton in the first test of the 1997 away Ashes series, and in the 3yrs preceding that innings he scored 2x tons and 9x 50’s – which is not much worse than Ponting.

Also highlights Watson's inability to convert scores into tons. :?

- Australia's 122-run win means they've rediscovered their winning ways at the MCG after suffering two defeats in the last three years, to South Africa and England. Since 2000, Australia have won ten and lost two Tests here. The result also continues the trend of decisive results at this ground: the last drawn Test here was in 1997, since when there have been 14 successive decisive matches.

- Australia's second-innings total was propped up by the last two wickets, which added 74. Throughout the year, their lower order has done pretty well, despite the regular top-order failures: their average runs per partnership for the last two wickets is the third-best among teams in 2011, but their average partnership for the top six is third from the bottom.

South Africa v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

- South Africa were beaten in a Durban Test for the fourth consecutive time. Their previous losses came against Australia, England and India. It is also their fourth consecutive loss in a home Boxing Day Test match

- Sri Lanka's 208-run win is only their sixth outside the subcontinent (not involving Zimbabwe) and their maiden win in South Africa. Before this, they had two wins each in England and New Zealand and one in the West Indies.

- It is also their first win since the victory over India in Galle in July 2010. In 16 Tests since Muttiah Muralitharan's retirement, Sri Lanka have won one Test, lost five and drawn ten.

- Rangana Herath's match analysis of 9 for 128 is the second-best for Sri Lanka in South Africa after Muralitharan's 11 for 161 in Durban in 2000. It is also Herath's best match bowling performance surpassing his 8 for 133 against Australia in Galle earlier this year.

- Dale Steyn picked up his 17th five-wicket haul in just his 50th Test. Among South African bowlers, he is behind only Allan Donald and Makhaya Ntini, who have 20 and 18 five-wicket hauls respectively.

- de Villiers, with his 27th half-century moved to fifth on the list of South African batsmen with the most Test half-centuries.

- Jacques Rudolph, who made a comeback after five years, last scored a half-century in 2006 in Colombo. Since that innings, he has scored 187 runs in nine innings at an average of 20.77.

Just a little bit of useless trivia - the Boxing Day Test was only the 6th time in history that 3 Tassie Shield players have ever appeared in the same Test team. Previously, Paine, Ponting & Hilfenhaus appeared in each of Paine's 4 Tests vs Pakistan in England (Lord's & Headingley) & India in India in 2010, and Ponting, Hilfenhaus and Doherty in the 1st Test of the home Ashes series at the Gabba last year.

IIRC, Krezja and Ponting played 2 Tests together (Krejza's only 2) and Booney & Greg Campbell definitely played at least some of the '89 away Ashes series together. Ponting and Shaun Young played (his) 1 Test together in the last test of the '97 away Ashes series.

Rivetting, ay?? ;) :D
