Geelong spinner moves to South Australia -Geelong Advertiser
GEELONG leg-spinner Jeremy Hart is crossing the border to chase his dream of playing first-class cricket.
Hart yesterday confirmed he was moving to South Australia where he's been encouraged by numerous meetings with high-ranking Redbacks' officials that there's greater opportunities to further his career in Adelaide than in Victoria.
The 26-year-old is taking leave without pay from his job in the Victoria Police force for 12 months to virtually become a full-time cricketer.
He's been encouraged to take the opportunity by his manager, former Australian and Victorian leg-spinner Bryce McGain.
While he hasn't been promised a contract with the Redbacks, Hart told the Geelong Advertiser that Redbacks coach Darren Berry and high performance manager Tim Nielsen have indicated that a strong start to the season in Adelaide grade cricket will see him force his way into the Redbacks one-day and Sheffield Shield teams.
"He (Berry) is a very attacking coach and his game style will suit my style of bowling I feel," Hart said.
"He's seen what a big part leg-spinners can play in four-day and one-day cricket and he said to me that he rewards grade cricket performances.
"When they started talking about their game plans and the spin bowling culture they're trying to create, it was very enticing and something I wanted to be part of it.
"Hopefully I start the season well, play 2nd XI cricket, get an opportunity (to play first-class cricket) and then do well enough to get a contract next year."
In the past three summers Hart has claimed an amazing 129 wickets for the Cats and was the leading wickettaker in Premier Cricket last season with 52 at an average of 18.58.
He was named in the Premier Cricket Team of the Year and won the Cats' Jason Bakker Club Champion award.
"We really hopes he takes this opportunity and plays first class cricket because that's his dream," Geelong coach Damian Shannahan said.
"You can't deny his performances the last three years. He's an exceptional talent and we'll still hang our hat on him if he represents South Australia."
