I've been reading through some of the comments on this thread, and it's frightening just how little a lot of posters understand about cricket. The more frightening part is they don't even realise they know stuff all, they just sprout off like they are experts. Incredible.

Fair dinkum. May was a standout for South Australia at a time when the Adelaide Oval was an absolute road. Warney didn't play that much for the Vics before he was snaffled by the Aussie team as he was quite rightly spotted as a freak early on. Sorry Jimmy, but May was quality and proved this many times during the late eighties and early nineties.

I agree May was a quality bowler, No dispute there, its just that there were times i can remember he copped criticism for bowling to negatively and being unproductive at times at shield level although he was one of the Best offies around. By point is with Cullen and Bailey, we need to be patient with them and not expect them to dominate just bcos TJ said a few years ago they had the potential to play for Australia which Cullen already has. Also havent heard of any other spinners names mentioned to take their place.

Can you think why May would have bowled defensively Jim? Think back to the state of the wicket for one, and the state of the SA attack for the majority of May's career as well. In the late eighties and early nineties the Redbacks had a fine batting lineup but the bowling stocks were nowhere near as strong.

May was the bloke that more often than not had to bowl sides out at Adelaide Oval and I'd suggest that he did it better than most players of his generation during his career. May was Mr reliable.
