The few times I've seen Alex, I don't think he's been anything special with the gloves. Obviously he goes alright with the bat, and maybe the games I saw were abberations

I thought last year, his glovework was some of the cleanest in the country in a long time, also being quite athletic he was able to take a number of sharp one handed chances really well.

Yeah has quick hands for stumpings and run outs, I was talking moreso behind the stumps where he let a few through and didn't catch what you'd expect of a top shelf keeper - Like I said, I haven't seen a lot of the lad and Bedge just pointed to last year when I don't recall seeing him at all, so Im going from a very small sample size. Hopefully he develops into the gun that far better experts than me, expect him to.

If he was terrible at keeping he wouldn’t even be in the frame for Aussie selection and they would be talking about going back to wade etc

Didn’t mean to say you did - was more just saying that the rumours of Australian selection at least make him a better keeper than wade

Can't disagree with that, purely coz I don't see enough cricket these days to have seen Wade lately, but doubt he's any better than before.

Might have been the Strikers first home BBL game this year, the commentators were raving about AC but I thought he was a bit loose behind the stumps that night, and again last night. Not trying to knock the kid, he obviously has ability and hopefully a huge future, just keeping-wise I haven't seen it yet.

Wade is probably still standing there watching a skied ball land at his feet (even though it was off a free hit).

Alex Carey has been flown into the Australian camp in Brisbane as cover for Tim Paine.

The strikers are well and truly stuffed haha. Do we even have a backup keeper in the squad?

Awesome that he potentially gets a gig though

Is he originally from SA?

Only 2 & 1/2 years ago was playing footy at Flaggy and couldn't make the Redbacks squad.

Uncapped South Australian Alex Carey has been called in to Australia's ODI squad as cover for Tim Paine, who is battling illness.

Paine has been hit by a gastro bug and is under a cloud for Friday's match against England in Brisbane.

Carey, who scored a brilliant century for Adelaide Strikers on Wednesday night, has been called in as cover in case Paine is unable to prove his fitness.

If Paine is cleared to play, Carey will return to the Strikers camp ahead of their next match, away to the Renegades on Monday.

The 26-year-old had been discussed as an Ashes bolter earlier in the summer and while he missed selection in the Test squad, he did post a maiden first-class hundred for South Australia in the JLT Sheffield Shield in December.

"Alex Carey, who will be on standby, just got a beautiful hundred last night," said Australia opener Aaron Finc

"He's taken his game to another level. He showed a lot of promise in Shield cricket over the last couple of years, and then to come out this year when there was a lot of talk about the Ashes 'keeping spot, and who was going to play, the way that he put his hand up and has continued to do so for such a young guy is really impressive."
Only Hurricanes sensation D'Arcy Short has scored more runs than Carey's 368 in the KFC BBL this summer, which have come from the top of the order at an average of 61.33 and a strike-rate of 139.92.

The left-hander was considered a chance for ODI selection ahead of Paine prior to the squad announcement for this Gillette ODI series, though ultimately missed out.

"Playing for your country in all formats is something that I really want to do," Carey said on December 29 following a match-winning 83 from 59 balls for the Strikers against Sydney Sixers.

"This stuff might help, hopefully put a few good performances on the board and you never know.

"Tim (Paine) was really good with the gloves in this format last year. We'll wait and see which way they go."

That chance could well come for Carey tomorrow, pending Paine's fitness as the gastro bug that has hampered Australia all summer continues.

Josh Hazlewood is another absence from the squad, with the paceman heading home with a virus that is unrelated to the gastro situation.

"We've seen it all through the summer from both sides, there's been quite a lot of illness, which is strange," Finch added.

"While Josh has gone down, Patty (Cummins) and Steve (Smith) during the Test match, does cause a bit of angst among the group – it causes a bit of separation, guys don't want to hang around with each other in case they're spreading it on – but the guys that are there to come in and potentially take their spot if they need are in great form as well."
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

I think he's very good with the gloves. My concern ATM is he is making one basic error each innings, the three strikers games I've seen on TV he's made the classic stuff up of coming up to early on the slow balls and conceding byes. Last night he let the four byes through of Laughlin, next ball goes for four, and the heat started their acceleration.

Judge a keeper by his mistakes not what he does was what i was told 35 years ago when I started having a crack at it.

That said outside of Paine he's the best going around right now especially given Whiteman is injured.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
