daysofourlives wrote:Strange decisions seem to follow him, 1st the SACA saw fit to bring in Botha and take the captaincy away from Klinger and then they let him go to WA without to much resistance. Seems like the SACA might think he wasnt the best example for team mates to follow

I didn't really agree with SACA taking the captaincy off him but someone there was desperate for the Johan to come to SA so the skipper carrot was dangled.

However, his stats stalled afterwards and then left him vulnerable as a first choice selection. In the end his performances didn't really warrant a longer term deal. Western Australia were prepared and they say a change is as good as a holiday...

His last season he had 3 younger batsmen with higher averages than him: http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/batting/highest_career_batting_average.html?id=8599;team=571;type=tournament

The great loss is obviously Hughes. Add to that Cooper and Ferguson regressing and the SACA has come out to look stupid

Another way of looking at it in Klinger's last season Hughes, Ferguson and Cooper averaged more than him and Head only averaged one less. You can, to an extent see how it was hard for the SACA to guarantee him a game

Just looking Klinger's numbers in 2012/13 were atrocious: http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/averages/batting_bowling_by_team.html?id=7544;team=571;type=tournament

Lower average then Hughes, Ferg, Mennie, Brown, Ludeman, Head, Christian and Raphael.

Obviously in hindsight a terrible decision. At the time though not without it's logic

True, but he recovered the following season (i.e. when he was still at South Australia):

He also played well for Gloucestershire in 2013 and 2014.

As I said before in 2013/14 Hughes, Ferguson and Cooper were still better and Head was snapping at his ankles.

Add that to bringing Cosgrove in, still having Botha and having high hopes for Smith you can see at the time it wasnt absolutely ludicrous.

In hindsight however ...

Scored almost 2000 runs in First Grade and 2nd XI cricket last year. He is the next best option along with Kelvin Smith....
