The problem was is that Smith just kept him on when they were getting killed. He needed to probably bring himself on for a few.

Smith, while a dud captain is no dill. Why would you bring yourself on when that carnage was happening. Dale Steyn is also a shrewd customer pulling a heartstring when he only had 50 runs to his name.

Just had a quick look, the only tests we have had in the last ten years where there hasn't been a declaration yet still got a result was against NZ and WI !!!

Well that's embarrassingly wrong. There was nothing to suggest he did hit that, but equally you couldn't say he didn't hit it. We know that all the technology has it's limitations and it should be assumed that if it doesn't show a mistake that it goes to the original decision. Terrible use of the DRS.
