Sensational fight by Hughes last night, just superb. In bad light and against the best attack in the world he stood tough despite the fact he was really copping some top notch short balls and looking uncomfortable. Steyn and Morkel gave it everything and he survived and punished the bad balls. 36* is a top effort, well done young man. :D

I'm glad he batted again, I would have done the same thing. It will be extremely tough to chase down 350ish on this pitch, I just hope we have enough time due to rain/bad light. Bad light seems to cut short most Test days there...

Should have been out.

But he did look very composed and played some excellent shots, looking forward to watching him tonight.

Agreed, some of the comments about Hughes were pathetic. 20 y/o kid on debut against a great attack, and in bad light, give me a freaking break.

And I cannot believe people are bagging Ponting for A. Not enforcing the follow on and B. Taking the light.

A. Batting last on this pitch will be very, very difficult, pitch is starting to cause some damage. We bat for another 2-3 hours today, get another 100+ runs and leave them chasing 400, near impossible with this pitch and these conditions.

B. Didn't everyone see how quickly the light was deteriorating? We would've been out there for another 5-10 minutes max before it became impossible. It was bad enough as it was. Yeah sure, lets bat for another 10 mins to score 10 possible runs and risk losing a wicket or two? Common sense says get off.

The criticism of Hughes for electing to take the 1st ball of each innings was just Ridiculous.
They said that Katich should have taken strike 1st up to shield Hughes.
FFS ! The guys in the Test side for a reason and that is to face the NEW ball. Thats his Job, not to hide from it.

F**Kn idiots.

Oh man, don't get me started about the commentators AGAIN. They've been nothing less than complete twats with their nonstop bagging of Hughes. He is a young kid opening the batting in his first test match, being played on foreign soil with the stakes high. The ball swinging all over the place no less.

Two quick wickets gone so Clarke at the crease. The good thing is these quick wickets have come when we're already well ahead, rather than coming at a time when we're in a big enough hole as it is.

3/99
