What a thread
It was started almost 4 years ago, and how things have changed
So much so that there is a new book being released next month
The book is titled Watto

I think its time for the critics in this thread to acknowledge just how good Watto has become

Has been in rare form since being made a opener and is great to watch. Although he hasn't made the most of this rich run of form. One little form slump and his record will be back to a mediocre one.

Bowling: 29

ODI:

Batting: 43

Test batting avg of 40 is not elite and god help us if it ever is.

It's fairly well elite in the context of an all-rounder, but as an opening bat, it's a pass mark.

But then again, what's his average AS AN OPENER?

One day, when it is 40 off 42 balls at Test level, it'll be elite.

I think this God you speak of needs to step in now. ;)

He averages about 50 in first class cricket for a guy who's been batting in the top order since he was about 20, he bowls at 140k and is a good fielder. I don't think he will be the great bowler people seem to think he is going to have to be, but his batting will be what gets him through, and his bowling will be a bonus. The comment about him not being fit enough is a joke. Watson is one of the fittest blokes going around. IMHO the problem is he is too fit, and too close to the line where fitness becomes injury. A couple of solid years will see the end of his hamstring injuries for a while I think, and then when he gets the chance to play a few tests in a row lets just him. Hayden, McGrath, Warne, Langer and Waugh were all supposed to never make it because they weren't good enough.

Said that in May 2008 in another thread. Watson's batting average might only be 40 but he's suffered the Mark Waugh syndrome of doing a lot of the hard work and not cashing in with cheap runs like Steve did.

Which is not elite. It's solid. Until he makes regular hundreds as an opener, he shouldn't be considered elite.

If he's an all-rounder, he shoudn't be opening bat. If he's an opening bat, he needs to convert more starts. Close, but no cigar. Yet.

Eh? Steve Waugh made some of the grittiest knocks I've witnessed, you always had some hope of victory whilst he was still at the crease, Mark Waugh lacked the patience and grit to mirror Tugga's achievements, his flamboyant batting style denied him of double hundreds.

McGrath was an elite bowler
Warne was an elite bowler
Lara was an elite batsman
Tendulkar is an elite batsmen

2 centuries in 52 knocks doesn't quite compare mate, nor does 49 wickets in 29 matches.
