Cameron White cannot be classed as a spinner, you must be able to 'spin' the ball to be in such company.Even the hiddena bility to do so would be enough.Cam has nothing.

when you look at the reply's life after Warne looks very scary ..... not one of the guys you have mentioned has the potential to bowl sides out like the great S K Warne .

Magill has some massive boots to fill .

Brad Hogg did a great job in the World Cup but ODI's are not tests (remember Peter Taylor was a great ODI bowler ...), so the stats should speak for themselves if there is a choice to be made.

Hogg:
Tests 4, Wickets 9, average 50.22
First-class games 92, Wickets 160, average 40.33

MacGill
Tests 40, Wickets 198, average 27.20 (Warne's was 25.41)
First-class games 174, Wickets 739, Average 29.88

Both are 36 so the SA boys (or any other spinners out there) need to fast-track themselves for the sake of Aussie cricket.

Nathan Hauritz anyone?
In between signatures .....

I think Hauritz is almost in the same class as Hogg & MacGill. Past it.

It is extremely difficult to fast-track a spinner. Shane Warne's fast-track into test cricket was a different situation to that of Cullen & Bailey.
Both Cullen & Bailey are very talented young spinners, but neither possess the same freakish ability that Warne had at the same age. I remember reading in Steve Waugh's book when he was watching Shane Warne in his early days, that he could actually hear the ball fizz through the air as it was bowled by Warne. He thought then and there that we have to get this kid playing for NSW, and very nearly did. Both Waugh and others knew that Warne had extraordinary talent, and that it must be harnessed.

Unfortunately there is no one like that around (that I know of anyway) and there most likely never will be again. The shoes are impossible to fill.

Hauritz never HAD it.

For the record - you can't compare Warne at his best to what is expected of a new up and coming spinner.

I remember watching Ravi Shastri belt Warne all over the park thinking what FRUIT is this guy bowling.
The quality of Warne has made it unfairly harder for someone to prove themselves at International level.

IMHO - IGNORE warne ever existed when picking another spinner.

Hauritz is not past it
You have to be there first.
Another off spinner who dosent take wickets

Why do Australian bowlers bother bowling off spin these days , they are an endangered spieces
Leg spinners take MORE wickets at test level in Australia on our pitches[MALLETT the last star offie, MAY was ok]
Daniel CULLEN in the Australian contracted list is a farce, he struggles to make the SA team

Warne is to spin bowling what Bradman is to batting, you are never going to replace him with someone of his ability so no point even trying.

It is unfair to even compare the current spinners on our contract list with him.

We are going to have to use our spinners in a different way now. No longer are you going to be able to put Warne and let him bowl 30 overs a day of either attacking or containing spin.

The challenge if for Ponting to develop new tactics and strategies to use the spinners we have now have.

For mine MacGill will be given first crack but I expect Bailey to be playing by the end of 2008.

IMO we have the pace bowlers to significantly cover mcGrath (not fully cover him) but when it comes to spinners we are going to be a lesser team. I am expecting Clarke and Symonds to get plenty of overs in the next few years (in addition to the new spinner) as we use spinners in shorter bursts (rotations) in an effort to break partnerships and then use the pace bowlers to attack the new batsmen.

No longer are we going to be able to leave a leggie bowling 30-40 overs per day from one end as we knew sooner a later a wicket was going to fall and let him weave his magic on the poor sucker who had just come in.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Based on your astute assesment of life after Warne, it gets back to that old topic
of intergrating a 5th bowling allrounder to assist in bowling rotations
Hence the importance of ROY/WATTO/WHITEY/ HOPEY in all future selections

No fall out from me Tassie. I tend to agree with you here.

What about the possibilty of Brad Hodge making the test side as an opener? Or push Hussey up to open with Hayden and Hodge slot in at 5?

My two teams (not sure which one I prefer yet...)

Hayden
Hussey
Ponting
Clarke
Hodge
Gilchrist
Symonds
Lee
Clark
MacGill
Tait

I think Cullen will be a regular with the Aussie One Day team very shortly. Not sure he will play many Tests - as you've pointed out it seems pretty hard for offies to take wickets (unless they have double jointed wrists and rubber elbows).

The Indians are probably the best players of spin in the world - so good luck to any young bloke who gets a go against them next summer. I imagine it will be MacGill though, and deservedly so given his record.

Jaques is brilliant to watch...

but I am not 100% convinced that he'll succeed at Test level .... maybe it's his different style or something?

I find Jaques' style very similar to that of Langer.

Jaques just hasn't got the "swagger" that Langer has. Or the gnome factor.

what absoulte crap mal, one bad year does not mean you are cut into the wilderness of 1st class cricket, let me remind you that he spent part of last season in India at the Champions Trophy given that he didnt play a game and back home Bailey took his opportunity as the number 1 and has been rewarded.

IMHO one of these has to improve their batting dramatically if both are going to play in the same team based on present batting displays Bailey is the one who can step up into a solid no.8

One good year dosent mean your a good cricketer either
If he stuggles to make the SA TEAM and makes a test contract how can that be absolute crap ?
Unless Burdett doctors his pitches he will again struggle in longer forms of the game

My thoughts on Jaques are well known (and quite right too even if I do say so myself LOL). This post is about the SCG MacGill bashing that has been going on...and I'm not having any of it!

Of course there is no way you can compare MacGill with the great Warne but we have been seriously spoiled in the last two decades when it comes to excellent leg spin bowling. If there was no Warne, MacGill would most probably be thought of more highly but perhaps the additional test matches might have affected how effective he has actually become.

MacGill has a superb strike rate and an average of 27.20 with 198 test scalps in the kit. MacGill has often come into the side with limited preparation and as I have already stated in this thread, poor form for the Blues. MacGill has already filled the large shoes of SK Warne in the past and should be given first opportunity to do so next season.

Cripes you blokes..get over it..we rule! Go the Blues.

regards,

REB

If BAILEY/HOGG/WHITE/CULLEN
can be half as good as Macgill at test level they will be good test bowlers
MACGILL is the number one pick, no contest
The others struggle in p/cup cricket....
