Flower a marque player?? Rankings are temporary, class is permanent. If you think Flower is of the same calibre of the players I have mentioned in my post more power to you but I respectfully disagree. The talent is thin on the ground and IMO, a marque player could well be the missing link.

I just think it is worth remembering that Andy Flower sustained a hand injury in the very first innings he played in South Australia, batting for Sturt. He never fully recovered from that injury in all the time he was here, so we never saw him at his best. Andy Flower was a class act.

Sobers

Richards

Garner

Flower

...in other words, good player for sure but nowhere near the other three. I suppose he was a 'champion' as well?

Would permanent class be nearly 5000 test runs at 51??
Never said Flower was in the same Calibre a player but think he is in the same calibre as a "marquee" player. Who should we aim for next year REB ....Kallis , Lara or Tendulker, we could try and get Inzamam but he only averages 50- clearly not a marquee player
I dont think on the ground is where the talent is thin....

Admittedly I'm going to stick up for Tait but if you only go for 32 runs, it doesn't matter if you bowl 32 wides.

He is behind though.

Andy Flower was a very very good cricketer. If i had to select a wicketkeeper from all time and Gilchrist was taken already Flower would come into calculations. Purely as a keeper he'd never get in front of Healy or Marsh but what he offered with the bat would just about seal it for me. Not many wicketkeepers (including Gilchrist) can lay claim to being their sides key batsman.Compare anyone to Sobers, Richards and Garner and they would struggle to stack up but that doesn't mean they aren't excellent players. I'm not one for stats proving a players worth but if you look at the record of a Richards for example many players (including Flower) compare very favorably to him.

It's a shame that Flower will most likely be remembered in this part of the world for his brief sojourn with the Redbacks that didn't work out that well rather than for his test career.

ORD,

you are right there however people that know anything about cricket will hold him in high regard.

Its similar to the average jo blow thinking glenelg and sturt are more successful than north adelaide

What was the point of comparing Flower to Garner? In answer to who I would rate as a Marque player I would suggest that Kallis would be an example of one..and one that would be impossible to lure at that. My point is that Flower is good but Garner and especially Richards and Sobers are greats.

As for such gems as 'anyone who knows anything about Cricket rates Flower as a great' or something along those lines remember this...Flower only played ONE test match against Australia for 28 runs and two outs in his own country. Flower is a Zimbabwe great perhaps but IMO Zimbabwe have yet to produce a truly great player.

Would it be worth SA trying to throw an inflated cheque at someone younger that looks as though they have a big future ahead of them ... I realise we already have youth on our side at present, but do they have the talent and will they actually show it as opposed to living on potential?

I haven't paid enough attention this year to know whos out there, but I notice a few posters talking up a bloke called Quinney on another thread, would it worth going after someone like this who has delivered early but is still yet to make his mark and wouldn't be entrenched in his current state's lineup?

Correct. This is the point most people overlook. I'd be more disappointed if they were no-balls because it may cost a couple of wickets.

CP, I reckon it would be worth looking at some ACT kids because they really have nowhere to go other than NSW. why cant the SACA put together a financial package for Grade clubs to recruit these types of players and then give these guys a chance to prove themselves in the grade arena before giving them a state contract or games
