I reckon it is because he was not going to get picked anyway MT79 - selectors would have informed him sometime in the last couple of days that he is out and given him the option to appear to retire, rather than his career ending by being dropped.

Blink you may not be far off the mark and The Age suggests that in its article, but if that is the case i.e. he has been given time to retire gracefully...why is the selection panal having to reconvene to choose the side for next week??

A similar situation to Ian Healy about 7 years ago and he didn't get a home farewell.

Was he given an escape clause :?:
I think he saw the writing on the wall or was told by the selectors he was finished.
Had a splendid career until the last 12-18 months, did a good job and can bow
out with some dignity.
Had he gone another few tests and failed it would have been a poor way to finish his career.
Age not ability has beaten Marto.
He has that great last game to reflect on when the Aussies pulled off that unreal win.

I have posted for his ommission, but deep down I will miss those flashy cover drives, those
delightful cut shots, and that flick off his pads through square leg.
If sides didnt have gullys he would have averaged 66 not 46

He did play some wonderful cricket at times. I'll always remember the 2005 tour of India. I couldn't stand him at the time but after watching him on that tour i was completely turned around. He was sublime in a series where no other batsman could get on top of the bowling.

Farewell to a fantastic cricketer. He served Australia and the mighty Western Australia well.

I saw him play as a 16-year old in a teachers v students game at my school - Girrawheen Senior High School in Perth - and he had oodles of class even then. He retired at the obligatory 25 mark which he achieved without raising a sweat. I still remember to this day a gorgeous cover drive he hit off a decent delivery.

What I liked about him is that he didn't pander to the media and was not a wuss. Coming from a working class suburb he was probably a little uncouth at times though.

He fought back from unfair criticism like when when he was unjustly considered (largely by the east coast media) solely responsible for Australia's loss to South Africa in Sydney in January 1994 to prove he was a worthy Test cricketer.

Onya Marto !!

fantastic cricketer

but to be honest a tool of a bloke

regardless, all the best to the bloke, he has obviously made some outstanding contributions to australian cricket, people have given him credit that he retired but I can't help to think that he was given the option

Great bat but a wanker. On sunday at the test he tried to get security to kick a mate out because he said to his 2 boys who wanted his autograph you better get in quick he might not be around next test. Martyn carried on like a pork chop, anyway he was a great bat who was a pleasure to watch.

To those he think he was a tool of a bloke, have you met him?? A mate of mine did at a cricket function in Darwin and found him to be a top bloke, easy to talk to and wasn't afraid to dip in when it was his turn to shout once the official part of the evening was over........

Met him once and whilst not as open as Langer, Warne Lehmann and McGrath was still okay to talk too but naturally reserved.

For those that have questioned his what sort of bloke he is I would seriously be interested in hearing any experiences you may have had with him that contradict mine. FWIW I'm trying to be serious here, genuinely interested if people have had different expeiences to my fleeting meeting with him which I'll openly admit was a short one.

No wonder the players want better security having to put up with that shit, soon Adelaide will be like Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane where the players will walk out of a tunnel away from the public to escape idiots like your mate Bulldog and the smartarse that had a crack at JL when he walked off after getting a pearler from Flintoff on Saturday evening.....

D!ckheads like that ruin it for the rest of us who appreciate the privalege of having the players walk past us especially the young kids that race to be next to the players entrance each morning of the test....

Maybe a nimble virgin to scatter rose petals in their almighty wake would suffice.

For some of us who remember the car crash that was The SCG in 94.

LOL

my point is if idiots keep abusing the players, barriers will be erected and the players will be physically removed from average spectator reinforcing negative sterotypes that they are aloof and detached when in most cases it is the opposite
