Outstanding game of cricket went to the wire.
SA only made 52 of the last 10 overs, should have got 275, poor finish
THORNLEY oustanding bowling at the death 10 overs 3/45
BORGAS another cameo 27 OF 23 Balls
FERGUSON brilliant 64
LEHMANN 85 of 96 balls, the highest rungetter in o/d domestic cricket showed why.
MANOU a respectable 20 of 24 balls finding some late touch.
CLARK 9 overs 1/28 outstanding again.

252 a competitive total

NSW at 2/80 were batting slowly and then came one of the blunders of the year.
COSGROVE was brought on to bowl before LEHMANN ...why ??????????????????
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
COSGROVE 3 overs 0/34
Then the next blunder, BLEWETT was brought on before LEHMANN..why ????????
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
BLEWETT 2 overs for 0/25
LEHMANN eventually 7 overs 2/32 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
COWAN + CHRISTIAN got there eyes in and the rest is history.
HADDIN a superb 56 off 47 balls got NSW over the line
NSW 6/253
9 needed of the last over and HADDIN hits 4+ 6 and NSW win with 4 balls to go.
Too many easy singles hurt us as well.
MANOUS keeping was outstanding, his catch to get HEN R E B IQUES caught was
a brilliant catch of TAIT.

For the 2nd time this week we lost a thriller to NSW.
Some bad bowling changes killed us.

Despite the bowling change blunders LEHMANN deserves to be man of the match
for his 86 and 2 cheap wickets.

Interesting to note that CLARKE + CULLEN flew home last night from India
both went ordinary CLARKE 5 OF 26 balls...CULLEN wicketless 8 overs 0/37.

Once AGAIN a poor batting start killed our chances.

Next game a 0/day game v TAS on 3/12/06

Daniel CHRISTIAN Ive only seen this guy play twice, and is a very impressive player.
Hits the ball very sweetly and a definite player of the future.
Suggest we all watch him closely, I expect a bright future.
REB whats the mail on CHRISTIAN?.

*************************************************************************

We now know who he is !

Yes he can play 68 0ff 79 balls when his side was struggling at 2/30
Plays like our Cam Borgas very correct and then can unleash some big shots.

Good catch, but I wouldn't go so far as to label his keeping as "outstanding". Adequate would be more appropriate I would think.

And I don't know if it was just the wide screen doing it, but you could show a movie on Cosgrove's arse, he really needs to fine down if he wants to play for Australia. Everything seemed a struggle for him this evening, both bowling and fielding.

Good win to NSW, thoroughly deserved. They played the better cricket all night. Restricted SA to just 251 on a pitch where you really needed 275 plus, and then paced themselves beautifully throughout their innings.

Go you Blueboys a great win against a team that seems to match up very well against us, well, whenever we have Katich, Lee and McGrath out heh heh.

SA at full strength are the better side however in my view* but Boof's captaincy reeked big time. First off, he bowled five overs of Blewett and Cosgrove and Cowan and Christian really cashed in. OK, Boof was tired from his innings but Danny Cullen must have been bursting to bowl after sitting on his ar5e so much in India recently. Now for the field placements...Boof had eveyone out for the majority of the innings and this allowed the Blues' batsmen to just plonk the ball around and take the easy singles. Very easy from the lounge chair I know but in my captaincy experience..as soon as you stop attacking you get done and this is what happened.

Another top clash between the two states.

REB

*that's without the International players of course.

Boof and Ferguson both played well, we were about 40 runs short on what looked a little green.
What was Manou doing on the last ball, I don't know.

Thought (one over in particular) Cossie was pretty stiff not to pick up a wicket, beat the bat a few times and almost had one caught in the outfield ... Hard to argue with the figures listed above, but I thought he looked likely to pick up a wicket or two.

That is true Permstance but sometimes you make your own luck and some more agressive field placements from Lehmann might have done just that.

Yeah fair call mate, can't argue with that .. Be interesting to see if the Redbacks can better utilise the talents within their ranks before the season is out of their reach (if it isn't already).

One man band?

Postby Rik E Boy » Thu Nov 09, 2006 2:43 pm

The problem is that Boof has to do everything. He has to bat for 40 overs, bowl for ten and skipper the side. Some of the other Redbacks should hang their heads as Boof is carrying quite a few blokes and has done so for many years. Surely Blewett is passed his used by date in domestic cricket?

We (here in Adelaide) constantly hear that our Grade cricket is as poor a standard as it has been for years, perhaps ever, yet when some one of the ilk of Blewett scores a couple of 50's (he has also opened the bowling for Kensington this year) we rush him into out the state team.I think Gregs time in the state side is past him,no disrespect to the man.He played some great Test match innings, some fantastic Sheild knocks and some inspirirng one-day games, both with bat and ball, but its time for selectors to move on from him,and perhaps Manou? What is wrong with throwing a 17-18 yr old kid in who is playing Grade cricket and 'keeping I ask?

As Rik has said,Boof has to do much, and at 34 (?) he needs to be a guiding light, not a shining beacon.
PAFC. Forever.

LOOK OUT, WE'RE COMING!

Good pick up re Boof's captaincy, I thought it was not his best night, biggest issue for me was he allowed the 3rd wicket partnership to pick up easy runs, even though Cullen was bowling extremely well, NSW still managed to pick up 5 an over without too many riskd

I understand you need to restrict the boundaries, but you also need to put the batsmen under pressure and support the bowlers that are bowling well, for me, Boof did not have the right balance against NSW and needs to work on restricting the singles and forcing the batsmen to take a risk or two

AG he is the BEST wicketkeeper in the state.
His hands are very good and rarely makes mistakes with the gloves.
His leg side takes of TAIT for several years now have been sensational.
He has made a couple of blues versus the blues in the last week but in
general his hands are as good as any keeper in the world.
His problem at the moment is his batting and this is where DEITZ.
is a better option.
In a world where all keepers in nearly all teams bat well is where MANOU struggles.

I notice we all agree with the Cosgove/Blewett bowling changes costing us a possible win.

REB I am in complete unison with your comments on captaincy etc.

general question

over the past couple of seasons the redbacks have found themselves in winning positions but have failed to execute under pressure when it counts

living in Sydney I have noticed how strong and competitve the standard of grade cricket is, as this is the pathway to NSW state team it has to be an advantage to their State representative team, in the same way our Shield comp prepares good test cricketers.....

my question, can the redbacks lack of success be contibuted to the standard of district cricket in SA, if so what can be done to rectify the issue
