Whether he was pushed or retired on his own accord, unfortunately punters time has come.

One of my favourite players, not just for his cricketing ability, but the consummate professional that he is both on and off the field.

Congratulations on a fine career ricky! Now we get to sit back, and fingers crossed, watch the next ricky ponting emerge through our ranks and dominate the test arena.

Congratulations Punter, I'm almost as sad as Michael Clarke was!

Congrats on a great career Punter.
Rate him the best batsmen of this 90-00's because he came in at no 3 for so long.
Will be sad not to see any more of those great innings.

Greatest player of my life time.
Sad that he's gotten to the point he is at currently, but that does not change how amazing he has been since 1996.

Thank you Ricky, hope you can stick it up the Saffers one last time!

A man's man. Led from the front from the beginning to the end.
Loved a beer and a punt.
And then there was Carlotta.

My favourite player and best I'll probably ever see. Enjoyed his ability as well as his attitude towards everything. Was always something to look out for in a game he was involved with.
I am looking forward to watching numerous highlight packages.

Me too, especially his century in the 2003 World Cup final. One my all time favourites.

Growing up watching alot of cricket and watching Punter coming in at first drop time after time after time, it's going to be so strange not seeing him the Australian line-up. He's been a stalwart of Australian cricket since I can remember.

Of course he was pushed, he's going to equal Steve Waugh's record for most Test matches by an Australian this match so not only would've broken the record in the 1st Test against Sri Lanka but in front of his home crowd in Hobart too.

Other than Lehmann no other aussie I enjoyed watching bat more than Ponting. An absolute champion.

Very sad day indeed in Australian cricket history with the announcement of "Punters" retirement. To average 50+ across 168 test matches now is just an amazing achievement. The captain of Australia throughout what was a golden era of aussie cricket. The consumate proffesional both on and off the field, one of if not the best batsmen i've seen in my time, awesome in the field also. Congratulations Ricky on what has been a wonderful career, I wish you all the best for whatever you set out to do away from the international stage. You will certainly be missed
