Spot on Jim...

On the off chance, on that minute chance, that Christian plays, lets say he does well, takes a five-for, and scores some runs...

What do you do with Cummins, Watson and Marsh all available?

The best side at the moment is going to be:
Watson
Marsh
Khawaja
Ponting
Clarke
M. Hussey
Still Haddin
Siddle
Pattinson
Cummins
Lyon
With Warner, Hughes, Starc all fit and percieved to be around the mark, you'd hate to thrown another name in there...

Has he even bowled since returning home?
Thought he would of played in shield match against Vics.
Reckon he has slipped down pecking list

My thoughts re Harris...
He's in his thirties, and is not a future player. If he's fully fit and can string back to back series (not games) together, then he's in there definitely, but at the moment, he is not capable of that requirement.
If we are going to struggle against the big nations (India, England) I would rather we play guys like Cummins and Pattinson now, and have them ready for the time that they are leading the attack, not have Harris in there, breaking down after a few overs, and forcing the young lads to bowl long workhorse spells, instead of short incisive, wicket taking bursts.
Siddle proved that he can be that solid stock bowling attack leader, whilst the other young guns have performed from the first opportunity.

Rhino needs a full Shield season in my eyes, of not getting injured, and continuing to do what he has done, but by then, it will be past him, as the next generation steps up.

I totally see your point MP but reckon in test cricket you play your best team no matter what series is coming up, or who is 'the future'. You are representing your country. At state level I see it only slightly differently

PHIL HUGHES at Test Level

16 TESTS
29 INNINGS
1048 RUNS
36-14 AVE

The disMisALs or not outs

1 NOT OUT
1 RUN OUT
2 LBW [not to a fasty bowler as yet]
2 BOWLED
24 CAUGHT

24 Caughts are :

5 CAUGHT BEHIND
5 1ST SLIP
5 NOT KEEPER OR SLIPS
4 GULLY
3 3RD SLIP
2 2ND SLIP

Phil has been dismissed 27 times by Test bowlers [excluding the not out + run out]
He has been caught by the keeper and slips and gully a staggering 19 times [about 70%]

HAYDEN
Matthew Haydens advice for Phil
'' Must be prepared to put away some of his pet shots .""

MAL
Mals advice to Phil
""Dont listen to Matt."'
This is how to play to balls that are getting him out behind the wicket
Dont poke, throw the bat, and try and hit them over point ,slips or gully for 4 or 6
The field is up, get a few easy boundaries
Sooner or later the slips will have to man 3rd man and point
Then the edges MIGHT get thru the weakened slips cordon as well

IF Phil is confused I suggest getting out the videos of his first few innings
He will see how he made a plethora of runs
He will also see that my advice is how he USED to play

But did Hughes only make a plethora of runs when the opposition were yet to expose his weakness?

Oh dear.Sage advice if he only has (T)20 overs to bat, but how can you possibly expect this type of play to succeed at Test level for long periods of time? Fine when the ball is new and flying around, what about when it's old, keeping low or moving around?

Boon and S Waugh are two examples of players who shelved certain shots that kept getting them out or exposed a weakness. While it curtailed some of the flair of their youth, it extended their careers very successfully. They became very hard to dismiss once they made the necessary adjustments. If you look at Boon's batting stance when he first played test cricket and compare it to when he finished they look like two different batsman.

So, for mine, Hughes needs to go back to NSW and spend 1, maybe 2 even years working on a new way of handling the balls that are constantly getting him out. He'll come back with less flair and more grind. He's not Viv Richards so I don't agree that the answer is to flay those balls in the air and stubbornly stick ways to the attacking ways that worked for him in junior cricket.

That said, I agree it works for Sehwag! If I felt Hughes was that good I would agree more with mal.

Second test, Aust vs NZ hobart starting Friday

Postby the joker » Wed Dec 07, 2011 5:28 pm

Rumours are rife in Tasmania that Phil Hughes has been told he will be 12th man. And Christian will debut. Apparently it's more for watson.
So Warner and khuwaja will open and open against India. And when a
Watson returns on boxing day he will move down to 6 to replace christian.

If he has such an issue, surely they would release him early to play in a state fixture, and get some six fingered rookie to mix the drinks.
