You get away with 4 quicks in 2 circumstances:

1 - the pitch is like Perth circa 1980s (even then when Australia played 4 quicks it didn't work that well - I remember us not being able to bowl NZ out in the second innings of the 1989/90 Perth test with 4 quicks)

2 - you have 4 world class test match bowlers a la West Indiies circa 1977 - 1995. They play 4 quicks now and they are cannon fodder.

Other than that, I'm with REB. Don't get too excited about the prospect of us playing 4 quicks. It doesn't make our attack much better, if at all, compared to 3 quicks and a decent spinner. If 3 quicks can't do it for us then 4 won't be able to. Let's also not kid ourselves that we have 4 genuine world class test bowlers. We have some good bowlers and some young guys who look very good but they aren't like the 4 Windies quicks in their day.

According to John Inverarity, James Pattinson was going to be rested for the Perth Test against India irrespective of his foot injury.

At Test level the best available team should be picked every time. A first-choice fast bowler should only miss a Test if he is genuinely injured otherwise you're flirting with form.

Given the amount of injuries we have in our fast bowlers right now (Cummins, Cutting, Johnson, Pattinson, Harris, anybody else?) and given it turned out Pattinson had an injury anyway I think the resting policy seems the right way to go.

He is but our best spinner isnt good enough against the Indians, they have been playing him like its backyard cricket even though he has bowled pretty well.

The Indians are living the dream every time Lyon comes on to bowl at the moment.

Three runs an over copping a real pizzling. We are still winning the series so what is to be gaining by destroying the confidence of our best spinner?

The WACA pitch is no longer the pace bowling paradise that it used to be.

anyone who knows anything about spin bowling will say that bounce is a most valuable weapon, so if its a traditional bouncey track then lyon will do ok.

Too play four quicks, we would have to find four that didn't break down constantly.

Off course his confidence isn't being destroyed by the fact the only wicket he looks capable of getting is the number 11 when there having a slap fest 150 runs behind our score.

Not as much as being left out of the team I would have thought.

Not if he has a cricket brain i think he would understand and in better conditions he would be the first spinner picked without doubt.

He doesnt have alot of tricks to go with so to make a whole career i think he needs one or two more deliveries. Wouldnt hurt for him to get some extra time in the nets rather than be a specialist fielder.

I heard a great comment from Greg Blewett the other night. Was along the lines off

"Like a top order batsmens confidence would be shot if they consistently got out to part time bowlers, Lyons confidence cant be great having the number 8-11 batsmen playing him with such ease and not looking like getting a wicket"
