Everyone seems enamored with Paine as a captain, but does he have any pedigree as captain anywhere at a high level? Fair enough he might one day captain the side, but we've seen so often that keeping and captaining are two very hard things to do. Especially when the guy isn't even in the side let alone well cemented in the side. Let's let him earn a spot in the side first, then we can think about making him captain. In all honesty I'm rather worried by all the talk of bringing in blokes from outside the team and making them captains! Let's pick a team for the next test series (which is a fair way off, a lot might have developed in that time) and see who deserves a spot first, then look at who the best captain out of that lot would be. I still think if Ponting plays, he captains for now at least.

Smith was made captain of SA when they'd just gone through the whole Cronje thing and they wanted someone who wasn't around under Cronje to get a clean break from the old regime (as much as was possible). Not to mention Smith was already in the side. Totally different situation.

Smith was dropped from the one day team, only to come back in as they made him captain. Think he was still in the test team at that stage, but definitely missed the few ODI's before coming back as captain.
