Quite simply, the SACA has run out of patience with him. You have to be a very special player before you even think about playing by your own rules, Cossy's good, but he ain't THAT good.

Not disagreeing that the SACA MAY have had enough of Cosi
My post is saying, if the peple running the show are not setting an example, then expect a player/players to do the same ?

No, I expect a player to take responsibility for their own actions. Cossy has paid for his.

Not just Mark Cosgrove, from reading wednesdays advertiser,SACA are not renewing Mark Clearys contract and Choc Manou is going to be replaced as captain.Really hope now that SA can perform better especially in shield cricket.

Well, that opens another debate, may as well get someone to change the title of the thread.

Cleary no great shock, although he'd be a tad stiff, after Rofe's retirement, he'd be the senior bowler.

If the side I named last night is in anyway near the mark, Dan Harris would be a near dead cert to Captain the side (if they don't want Manou).

Only other smokeys I could think of would be Klinger or Ferg.

They might even bring in a captain from interstate.

Having a guy like that in the team undermines the coaches efforts in setting the right standards. Also, because he's been seen to be getting away with his weight issues for a long time, it doesn't bode well for others in the side who may consider him getting off lightly, thereby causing disharmony in the side.

Not only will this give Cossie a shake up, it will more importantly give the team a pretty quick shot across the bow to all and sundry in the side.

Well done SACA, finally someone has taken the tough stance.

Who to replace him with.....who cares. Blood some young bloke who wants to be there and do the right things. Lets face it, there's only one way to go from here.

Great post and spot on

I sat next to the players race for 2 games this year and took particular notice of Cosi up close and there is no doubt he carries at least 5kgs more than he should, i seriously doubt any other state will pick him up unless he loses this weight

I think another state will pick him up, because they will just assume the SACA made little attempt to get him to lose weight. They'll think they can do better. Anyone who signs him could be in for a rude shock, especially when he returns from England carrying that extra 5kg he puts on every time he goes there.

I have grown a little tired of hearing peope say he's averaging 40 which is good enough to stay in the team, so what difference does his weight make? I've heard people say he bowls a number of overs during the day, so what difference does it make, etc. He was captain of his club team in the Grand Final, and he had to leave the field each and every time he finished a bowling spell, as well as taking himself out of slip and spending time on the fine leg boundary. Not an indication of a fully fit and mentally alert player to me.

I am not anti-Cosi. It may sound it but I am not. I am just disappointed with him because he has elected to ignore good advice from both the SACA and the ACB. He could have been a top batsman, but he chose mediocrity, and that will always sadden me.

The tragedy of it is all he had to do was adopt a low fat diet and walk an hour a day on top of his track work, and he would have lost 10kgs easily.

My Two cents

This was on the cards for some time and so is really no great shock. Cosgrove has previously been suspended for lack of professionalism towards SACA cricket and this has had none/little positive impact upon him/his attitude. There have been players in the past who have played the fool and messed around off field (Lehmann early in his career), but when it came time to knuckle down and perform they DID. This is/should be the focus of this..Cosgrove has not performed and more importantly progressed. Cosgrove had one good and one very good Australian FC seasons (03/04 ave 45.6 & 05/06 ave 66.9) the rest of his career in Australia had yielded a FC average of just over 32 and another thing that must count against him, is that in eight Australian FC summers he has played more than eight games only once.

In looking at this it is apparant that SA are to bottom out and reload, but three stats make this more concerning
- Australian U19 side 15 players (2 from SA)
- Centre of Excellence 2010 induction 28 players (1 from SA)
- SA's squad from last year has only four players that are now under 23 (Smith 21, Cranmer 21, Richardson 19, Francis 19)

Where will the next Redbacks come from????

That's about right isn't it? Any more and we are fighting above our weight (which would be nice, but not expected).

With regard to juniors, the structure and approach has changed in the last 12-18 months - this needs to be given opportunity to take hold and produce results, which I believe it will.

Is the issue with South Australian cricket at the state team level or below that.
For a smaller state, population wise we have an aweful lot of District clubs , therefore diminishing the standard of competition at the "feeder" level for the state team.
I also heard a Dizzy Gillespie interview a while back where he made mention of how most district wickets were flat batsmen friendly tracks, meaning most clubs relied on medium paced bowlers bowling stump to stump and discouraging the young potential quicks.
Our state has struggled to post good scores interstate against quality fast bowling - could this be due to only getting practice coming up thru the ranks on friendly wickets against as dizzy put it medium paced stump to stump bowling ?

Cosgrove has been told he can go to Queensland and take his chances but won't be offered a Bulls contract or a guaranteed spot in any of their three sides.

I agree AH, I'm not anti-Cosi either in fact I hope this makes him succeed somewhere! Even maybe forcing his way back to SS cricket in SA. But I get tired of blokes with that much potential who won't do the hard yards to make a success of that natural god given ability. Meanwhile, we sit in office buildings wishing every single day that we had that much ability in our chosen sport.

So Cosi, seriously, best of luck. Just remember you're a long time retired so make the most of it while you can.
