It's a pity a person with so much talent has fallen in such a manner

Yep, didn't recieve any public support from Cricket Australia and he was hung out to dry. Been ****** ever since.

I didn't know him personally, but as a "Roy Lover" it's a big disappointment. Hope he gets the help he needs.

More devastating than any of this, is the fact that Cameron White will be Roy's replacement if the ICC allows it....

Shocking decision by selectors!

I would have preferred Hodge but regardless White is a pretty decent 20/20 player.

Symonds for SA? His required salary might be a bit hot for the Bulls. SA needs a 'star' and would surely have room to move.
Not sure of my thoughts on this, but...just a thought...

Quotes from an ABC story:

Queensland Cricket chief executive Graham Dixon said he cannot say whether he will have Symonds back at the Bulls.

He said he will meet with Symonds when he returns to Brisbane.

"We're right in the contract situations with the state players now," he said.

"It would be a very awkward situation to revamp our contract list if it was decreed that Andrew was a Queensland player and had to be paid out of the Queensland pool.

"It's an interesting one and it's a question that needs to be addressed."

We've all played with about 100 Andrew Symondses (LOL, not sure what the plural of Symonds was!). You know, they love playing Cricket, having a beer with the boys and going fishing. Problem is, Andrew was a bit too good for his own good. When he wanted to hit the turps there was a wanker with a camera in his face or some other pisshead wanting his autograph when all Roy wanted was a beer. When he wanted to fish for barra he had to play cricket against the Bangas. Screw that let's fire up the tinny he said.

Roy wanted the benefits of Ford Ranger ad campaigns but didn't have the discipline required in order to continue to attract such things. Instead he got the headlines. I have heard it said by someone (can't remember where) that he was ready to walk away from Cricket after being hung out to try to appease those sooks the Indians. Perhaps he should have done just that. Headed off to warehouse cricket in the sunny BrisVegas Winters with the odd commentary gig when the summer rolled around and plenty of cheers and beers for the Royboy.

He owes us nothing but he owes himself some peace of mind and the media should get out of his team mates' faces looking for that 'angle'. His talent took him to the spotlight and Australia to a world cup. Let him walk away and have a beer I say.

regards,

REB

Great point REB.
Throughout the past 12 months or so, I've wondered how much of his 'issue' has revolved around the fact he was left high and dry by Cricket Australia following the Monkey debacle. My bet, a lot of it.

I think this situation has broader ramifications for cricket as well.
In some ways, I don't know how much of a blow this is for Symonds. He'll still get the big bucks in the IPL - he can do what he wants there and no one's going to argue with him. Just like the good 'ol days.
International cricket seems set to lose Symonds and the West Indies current star Chris Gayle to the 20/20 market. This sort of thing is a look at the future of cricket.
Not saying the game hinges on these two stars but their example will be watched by future talented young players who might wonder why they need to play traditional international cricket with its old values, restrictions and less money for more work.
The ICC needs to step up and make sure international cricket is not devalued by the money thrown around for 20/20. However, while that money's being thrown about and particularly from one area, I can't see too much leadership coming from the ICC.

Where's the chorus of people blaming the media this time? Maybe even they've realised Symonds is an out of control dimwit with no respect for the game that's made him his fortune or his team mates.

And to think Ponting was agitating for him to be in the Ashes squad, nice call Ricky.

Probably first time i've agreed with you about anything on this site Topsy ;) but yeah agree with that.

Symonds should have had his file marked "not to be selected to play for Australia again" 12 months ago. The bloke only has himself to blame.

This statement is the last port of call for the internet nerd who is defending the indefensible.

But as someone who venerates Scott Salisbury I'm guessing you're not too cluey. :D

Symonds is an idiot but I blame CA.

What a disgraceful decision to send him on tour anyway.

Spose it depends on how bad his drinking problem is...
I think we can assume he is addicted - a true alcoholic. In which case if he has one drink he is likely to drink till he passes out.
