No you're not alone. He's a favourite of a lot of supporters for some reason. Maybe it's because he comes from Tassie we feel sorry for him? :D

He's not super-quick and hasn't moved the ball much so far so I am not 100% convinced on him at this stage. Happy to stand corrected once he plays test cricket but I wouldn't put him clearly ahead of Bollinger. I don't think the RSA batsman will be quivering in their boots about him, put it that way.

Even NFC has been disappointed in him so far and Hilf is one of his favourite sons

Great state record tho, deserves his spot in the squad.

Katich
Hughes
Ponting
Hussey
Clarke
North
Haddin
Johnson
Siddle
McGain
Hilfenhaus

Bollinger

It has been posted a couple of times in varying order, but I really hope that this is the team that is selected for the First Test.

Where the heck did North spring up from...?
Definetly rate the guy, but Jacques, Klinger, Ferguson, The Dave would all be ahead in the pecking order, surely...

Well maybe not Fergie, but he's been awesome...

Yeh I don't get the Hilf. Looked so good in that T20 game a year or two back mainly because he got a heck of a lot of movement. This summer he's finally got his chance to cement himself in the ODI side and yet he's struggled. As I said previously he seems to be trying to bowl too fast. I thought he could only bowl at around 135ks so I was shocked to see him bowling at 147. He doesn't need to bowl fast, he should concentrate on getting movement. He doesn't get much movement off the pitch and his lines aren't that great so he has to get swing to be effective. Basically he hasn't been getting any movement at all this summer and as a result he's struggled. :?

great to see Hughes in the squad. Not sure what Klinger has to do to get a berth but well done to North who has been around the mark for a while now.

Have to agree
He is a good batsman but he has not excelled enough to grab a spot
for the record these are his shield stats this season

103
141

the 103 + 141 was against the vics who had Nannes and Siddle with the new ball
I guess they have selected a middle order batsman, Klinger, Rogers are 1-2-3 batters
Fergy has made a late run, but needs another good season
The Dave [I assume thats Hussey] has age against him

Perhaps Norths last 4 digs was the clincher for him.

I agree.

Kreyza did go for a bit but at least he attacks and looks for wickets. Hauritz bores the crap out of batsmen, that's the only way he gets them out.

Stoked for Hughes, I hope he gets a gig. What a gun.

I think the selectors got confused, they were meant to pick a Western Australian left hander who bowls.
Perhaps they meant Wes Robinson who is a left hander who bowls for the west
W.Robinson has played 4 games

0......16....2/26...0/10
141...6......0/8...DNB
20...15......2/60...DNB
78....46.....0/18...1/10

North averages 38 this season but W Robinson averages 40
W Robinson averages 26-40 with the ball

I actually saw his 141 against South Australia in an innings of true grit
His 78/46 was in a low scoring game when West beat Queensland

So perhaps it was W Robinson or are the selectors lost in space.

It may have been the selectors' "will". These comments may be a little outdated for some of our younger posters :)

Bit harsh on Hilfenhaus. His first class record is 24 wickets at 18 in 6 matches this season, with two 5 wicket hauls. Bowling in First Class/Test cricket is a whole different ball game than ODI's.

How much do you really take out of ODI form. It's a different ball for starters. Plus the batsman are in a different mindset and the fielders are scattered all over the place.

I reckon Hilfenhaus will be a very good bowler for Australia in Test cricket. Hopefully he finally gets a go in South Africa.

And great to see the selectors go with Hughes. Easily the best performed next cab off the rank batsman and regardless of age, deserved a go. His young age is a bonus.
