He's 37 he cant play on for ever. His average over his past 10 innings is 25. He has a poor record in England and the ashes are nearing. The time has come to find a long term opening partner for the KAT. Retire gracefully at Adelaide on home soil sounds like a good option to me. In saying this he will most likely go out and blast a 100 against the kiwis attack on the batting paradise of Adelaide and cement his spot for another 5 tests, then gets found out in England again. Get some one in thier now and some test cricket under thier belt.

If there was a suitable option to replace Hayden i think he'd almost be "asked to retire", or retire of his own free will, after the Adelaide Test which i think is his 100th. With no standout alternative, however, i think he'll continue for at least the end of the Sth African series.

I guess he'd be the best option, but i think ideally it would be good to see someone in their early to mid 20's putting their name forward for an opening spot - Hughes is still establishing himself, Marsh from WA isn't making huge runs opening for WA, and Rogers probably isn't seen as a long term proposition.

Marcus North I think is 30 next year, he is probably another reasonable option, but i don't think he's done quite enough either to replace Hayden.

Rogers has only just turned 31, 30 is the new 25 for Australia in test cricket, Langer and Hayden only started to perform at around this age. I hate how young players with 1 season under thier belt can leap frog someone who has performed for their state for several seasons. Rogers has a outstanding career record, and is performing this year. Rogers is the best opening batsmen outside the test team. North isnt a opener didn't play last year because of injury, has had a good start to the year, will get a tour to SAF or England next year.

After Roger's very unsuccessful test debut he was dropped from CA's contract list so that would give us an idea of where the selectors see him. He'd need to do a Kat and have a sensational season for Victoria before he'd be considered again.

IIRC the only other opener on the contract list is Phil Jacques who I think is still injured?

Haydos will know when his time is right to go. Even if his best days are behind him I still think he's one of the best opening bats in the world. There's been enough movement in the side recently to give some new players a go I don't think Haydos is holding anyone's career back.

Not that ******* common on this site so far this summer. The only place where knockers belong is in a woman's bra. Save your precious hatred for Shane Watson.

Well in my opinion Hayden should be allowed to play on. At the moment he got out to a couple of pretty good balls. That one he got in the second innings, well Martin will never bowl a ball that good again.
Still having Katich making runs is a bonus. When Hayden returns to form the top order will have a much different look to it.

Yeah i mean he's never done anything of significance in Test cricket

He's in the side because he is a proven match winner with a pretty good record. Only Katich and Clarke made more runs for Australia in the first test too.

Spot on mate. Nobody would know better than Haydos that he's nearing the end of his career. He's not retarted. I would like to see him at least play the Suth Afrikin series. He certainly deserves it!

I would think Hayden has earned the right to determine when he retires,BUT,the selectors must be close to giving him the "jump or get pushed" talk. Even if they only touch the surface of such a discussion and Hayden is far from silly and would know exactly where he is at.

For mine,I would give him all the domestic summer to find his feet as we need an old head at the top of the order come Ashes 09,but if his next 5 test here are similar to recent form it may mean a change before we go to England.

A new problem then arrises, who comes into open? Or does Hussey open and we bring in a middle order bat?
