They'd rather believe Andy Flower was a dud cricketer. He broke his hand in his very first appearance in SA when he made about 160-odd for Sturt. After that he struggled to hold the bat, let alone make runs.
I spoke with Andy towards the end of the season and at that stage he was very much looking forward to returning to SA the following year as he was aware he had something to prove. It was his intention to eventually make SA his home. Even at that late point in the year, he still had his hand in plaster.
However, the SACA made certain promises to Andy, i.e. employment and a furnished rental house, but upon failure to deliver these promises for the entire first season he was here, the Flower family thought it best not to return. He also had a young family and thought it best not to keep travelling from one part of the world to the other every 6 months.
It is a real pity he never returned as we would have seen a far more productive Flower in the second season.
I'm not suggesting that Andy Flower is a dud cricketer (I was as excited as everybody else when I heard that he was playing for the Redbacks), but you'd have to agree he did have a dud season.
If he had a broken hand then why play him? You wouldn't make a bricklayer with a broken hand work because he wouldn't do as good a job.
All I'm suggesting by creating this poll is that maybe the Redbacks should do what Central Districts did, and take a few years of pain to develop the young locals coming through (15-20 year olds) with some
very selective recruiting.
