If HUSSEY averages close to 80 shouldnt he be top of a ratings list ?
How are these ratings worked out ?

Test Match Rankings

For a batsmen the factors are

* Runs Scored- The rating of the opposing bowling attack, the higher the combined ratings of the attack, the more value is given to the batsman’s innings.

* The level of run-scoring in the match and the team’s innings total- an innings of 100 runs in a match where all teams scored 500 is worth less than 100 runs in a match where all teams were bowled out for 200. And if a team scores 500 in the first innings and 200 in the second innings, a century in the second innings will get more credit than in the first innings

* Out or not out ( Not out recieves a bonus)

* The result. Batsmen who score highly in victories receive a bonus. That bonus will be higher for highly rated opposition teams

There are probably 3 or 4 unlucky guys not to be in the Top 4.

My Top 4 would be: -

Ponting
Hussey
Kallis
Yousuf

Have watched a lot of Yousuf on Foxtel and he is an incredible batsman. Great temprement and would be better if he had a couple of batsman who could hang around with him. All too often bats with the tail. Looking forward to seeing him bat when he comes to Australia.

How you could leave the likes of Sangakarra and Pietersen out just shows you how good these other guys are. I still reckon Pietersen throws his wicket away all too often.

For consistency though you can't go past the 4 above......but that is just my opinion and I'm sure many will disagree.

ok i think anothe rkey aspect of a great player is they make runs all around the world. here is how they compare in each country

kallis...country...ponting

48.53.....aus......64.63
n/a........ban......95.50
37.07.....eng......42.63
75.40.....ind.......12.28
66.25.....nzl.......97.66
83.14....pak......119.00
57.67....saf........65.70
35.33....srl.........54.45
n/a.......uae.......97.00
50.69.....win.......98.71
503.00...zim.......31.00

there is only 1 glaring failure between them there and that is ponting in india with an average of only 12. so perhpas the arguement could be made that pontings weakness is bigger than kallis'?

tassie the attacks you have mentioned there for south africa arent particulary that strong- the allan donald of 2001 was well on the way out and ntini was only in the side at that point in time as a quota player. and the fact you are having symcox in there is a bit of a joke in itself.

looking through some more stats its hard to split these 2 and they are a good comparison as they have played almost the same amount of tests and had almost the same amount of innings. the only real diference is that ponting has the double centuries

Could argue forever as to who is the better player of Ponting and Kallis but just answer this question. Who would you pick if you could only pick 1 (take Kallis' bowling out of the equation)?

I know i'd go Ponting every time.

That's your opinion Locky. I'm not Ponting's biggest fan. I've taken a long time to appreciate his ability whilst i have always been a big fan of Kallis. I'd still go Ponting.

If i had to pick one of the two to bat for my life Ponting would be the guy i pick.

Even taking into account Kallis' bowling, I'd still pick Ponting. With Lara retired and Tendulkar not the player he once was, Ponting is easily the best batsman in the world at the moment and I think has already joined Tendulkar and Lara as the three absolute elite batsman of the modern era.

I don't see enough Test cricket to rate the other batsman, but Pietersen is worthy of being in the top bracket, as is Hussey and Yousuf, Sangakkara and Kallis records are worthy. Not sure how the Indian batsmen are travelling? Laxman, Tendulkar, Dravid and Sehwag all are classy, although I notice Sehwag hasn't even been picked in the squad against Pakistan?

My top 4:
Ponting
Hussey
Pietersen
Sangakkara

My opinion exactly..

There is no way in my mind that Kallis is better than Ponting.. I know who i would pick first every time.

The only thing about having Mike Hussey so high is that the actual situations that he bats in..there are not TOO MANY times that he comes to the crease when the Aussies have their backs to the walls and NEED a lot of runs. This is where I think a player such as Kumar Snagakkara should be getting this deserved recognition as the batting lineup that he has around him is far from world class.

BRODS TOP FOUR
1. R. Ponting
2. J. Kallis
3. K. Sangakkara
4. D. Light
