first of all mal as a batsman you can only bat against who bowls to you as with everything you can not compare eras for mine both were/are very entertaining batsmen to watch but i'd have boof well ahead of hookes

ps, on another note then with your arguement that hookes faced better bowlers, i'll ask where does that put m.haydens 380 against a team of no hopers i presume we dont count that score ? :? :? :?
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Thanks and Good Luck Boof, You are a dead set legend!!!

I doubt it. Verrrry good mates.

I agree DW looking at Boof's last outing against NSW he looked very uncomfortable and it stood out like dog's balls when the captain had him fielding at long on/off.

I suspect that this has been brought on by the upper management team who seem to think that is the case.

They do lie sometimes
Hookes played a lot of cricket against far far far superior bowlers at test level
At state level that is not applicable
Dont worry about Boofs ave compared to Hookseys its the opposition.

Mal you must be stirring surely.Hookes had a single test century against Sri Lanka in their very first test match. He massacred good bowlers more than boof at the highest level ???? Ridiculous statement and the average of 34.00 compared to boofs 44.00 tells the whole story.Boof played the Pakis in Pakistan and India in India with technique and skill Hookes could only dream of

Disagree there Mal, Lehmann did much better in a similar number of tests to Hookes.

Test Averages
HOOKES 34
LEHMANN 44

If Hookes was batting in the last 10 years he would be up to 44+ as well.
The attacks in cricket in the last decade are the weakest Ive seen in the last 40 years.
The 10 run differentials in the averages are not a true indication.
Lets not forget Hookesy was good enough to play Packer world series cricket
and in those games against some of the worlds greatest bowlers he averaged close to 40
I doubt if Boof could average more than 35 against that sort of bowling.

In state cricket I was too presumptious and will concede that Boof was a slightly better player.
BUT
Hookesy would have faced the International bowlers more often in domestic cricket in his era.

HAYDEN 380 V ZIMBABWE
DIZZY 200 V BANGLADESH

Im sure if Hooksey faced more of those attacks he would have averaged a lot more than 34 in Tests.
When he did play a minnow side he made a 100 v Sri Lanka
Hooksey spent chunks of his career against very good English + West Indian attacks

Once again just for the record
HOOKES batted against ROBERTS/HOLDING/GARNER/CROFT
If he faced EDWARDS/LAWSON/GAYLE/SAMUELS ............

I believe in the old adage
I use it in horse races/dogs/sport
" YOU ARE ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR OPPOSITION."

If that adage does not make sense check out Muralis bowling record against
BANGLADESH at home
AUSTRALIA in Australia

Both were ONCE in a GENERATION Players and Entertainers for South Australian Cricket and i consider it a futile excercise in debating who was Better Player. Both will be Remembered as Legends of the Game in SA at Least and thats THAT. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

Anyone Got any ideas on who our next legend will Be ???
Has Taity got a chance if he Performs well in the next 6 - 7 years as He IS the Fastest bowler in the world OR will he end up being Remembered as a Very Good Bowler for SA Like Hogg, Garner, May, Mallett, Mal etc ??

Our next legend?? More than likely isn't on the scene at the moment, probably a young gun such as Isiash Borgas. Long way down the track though.

Todays Sunday Mail 18/11/07 page 55

_____________________________________________________________________________

If you think Test cricket can get boring these days thank your lucky stars
you were not watching it 60 years ago.
Australian cricket magazine has done a study that has found Australias current
run rate is 65per 100 balls-a massive increase on the pedestrian 50 per 100 balls back in 1946-7.
In defence of our batsman who played 60 years ago, at least they were playing
against stronger opposition than our current players are.
______________________________________________________________________________

LEHAMNN 44
HILL 39
HOOKESY 34

Now If one person can tell me that Boof is a better Test batsman than Clem Hill .....

Clem Hill played for Australia betwwen 1896-1912

49 TESTS
89 INNINGS
3412 RUNS
39.21 AVE
7 CENTURIES

Was the first AU batsman to score 1000 runs in a season
The only player to achieve this feat twice before WW1
Had the most test runs at the time of his retirement in 1912
Had the most runs until passed by Jack Hobbs in 1924
Had the most runs until the boy from Bowral passed his total in 1934
Was considered the best left hand batsman before WW2 in the world

STATE CRICKET

160 INNINGS
8027 RUNS
53-16 AVE

Historians have said HILL was one of the alltime greats
Yet he has an average 5 less than Boof

______________________________________________________________

YOU CAN ONLY CONSIDER AVERAGES IN THE CURRENT ERAS OF PLAYING.
TO COMPARE AVERAGES FROM ONE ERA TO ANOTHER CAN BE MISLEADING
_______________________________________________________________

Smithy I never saw him bat, maybe Coorong has though.

18/11/07
This day will be one of the sadest days in Domestic cricket.
Expecting Darren Boof Lehmann to officially announce his retirement

Paul Nobes has said in the press
" What a fantastic career I rank him ony behind the Chappell
brothers and just in front of David Hookes "

Very sad day.
Particularly as Boof was so looking forward to this being his valedictory season with the Redbacks.
The last SA cricketer to have been playing during my childhood.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.
