But I think it should be looked at - obviously there's something missing in local cricket (like talent, perhaps).

People harp on about the standard of the grade comp. Here is an opportunity for players with a bigger disadvantage with talent. perhaps these new 19/20 year old recruits would have to play a minimum one season before being selected. A gentle tap on the shoulder if you move to Adelaide and perfom well over the next season bigger things may be in order.......

Really, how many quality 19yo's are going to shift to Adelaide to play grade cricket? Adelaide can't compete with the $$$ Melbourne and Sydney grade clubs offer, or even the cash being thrown around in NSW, Vic and Qld country cricket. The only way anyone would move here would be with a SACA rookie contract.

Granted he has been terrible with the bat but what has been so wrong with his captaincy?

well Heater, looks like you have hit the nail on the head. Boof to have ameeting today I think it is with SACA, I would say he will be out the door at the end of that meeting. One hopes not, be a tragic way for a guy who has given so much to cricket in this State to leave, but looks like the writing is on the wall sadly :(

Oh Deare  Well just when it looked like SA cricket couldn't get any worse out comes this article. Have a feeling that some very recent decisions made in ragards to recruitment might not be sitting too well with a number of people either.

I can't see how these public comments do anything for team morale

I accept Adcock can't stay captain without contributing with the bat but have expressed support for him while he has the job

But how do Deare's comments do anything but hammer the final nail in Adcock's confidence coffin?

I guess he is trying to use it as a rev up for Nathan but my tip is that he was already well and truly feeling the pressure

I was staggered when I heard Deare's comment on radio last night

South Australian cricket was in turmoil last night with skipper Nathan Adcock set to be sacked while its high-performance arm threatened to unravel.

Australian cricket's eternal problem child threatened to implode as it emerged:

KEEPER Graham Manou could make a remarkable return to the captaincy.

DARREN Lehmann is unlikely to finish the season, with his future to be decided in a meeting with SACA today.

NEWLY APPOINTED fourth selector Jeff Hammond could succeed Paul Nobes as chairman of selectors next year.

SACA chief executive Mike Deare confirmed current skipper Adcock would be axed if he failed to improve on his current return of 50 runs from six Pura Cup innings. "The reality is if Nathan doesn't perform he will not be in the squad," said Deare of Adcock, who has led SA to three Pura Cup losses since replacing ousted legend Lehmann as skipper this season.

"As a player he will need to get some runs and wickets in the next couple of matches. His performance as captain I think has been reasonably good. As a player he is not happy with his own performance."

Deare took the extraordinary step of floating replacements who finished behind Adcock in the interview process for the captaincy this year.

"There are at least two others that the selectors feel capable of taking over the captaincy role should Nathan find himself not selected," Deare said. Reinstated keeper Manou, axed as custodian from the Pura Cup side last season should lead the side - as he did impressively in 2004-05 - if likeable Adcock goes. Test veteran Jason Gillespie would loom as an ideal deputy.

Deare and Lehmann last night agreed the left-hander's 20-year career appeared certain to end prematurely.

"My achilles will never be 100 per cent. I just wanted to enjoy my last year of cricket," said Lehmann, who missed SA's Pura Cup loss to New South Wales with back spasms.

Deare insisted Lehmann must prove his fitness to continue his stellar first-class career, saying: "If he continues to prove his fitness he will stay in the squad."

A section of the SA squad is understood to be in dispute with high performance manager Rod Marsh - particularly Lehmann.

However Lehmann said the Redbacks would "warmly welcome" New South Wales allrounder Daniel Christian - to be catapulted into SA's one-day side to face New South Wales next Wednesday.

"Dan will join the squad with our best wishes," said Lehmann of hard-hitting Christian, personally recruited by Marsh last week.

Hammond rejected assertions he has been brought in as circuit breaker between the players, selection panel and high performance director Marsh. SA's last title-winning coach believes he is the extra pair of eyes and "sounding board" the Redbacks need.

"I think you would agree that if we haven't got selectors attending state training and making sure we have an appearance at every state game then we are not performing our function professionally," Hammond said.

If they decide to make darren lehmann retire who will score our runs. imagine what all the chocco haters on this site will say if he is named captain.

The SACA management have absolutely no F**KING idea first they lynch Boof into the oblivion now they set the cross hairs to another player who gives his all. He also happens to be arguably the sides best bat as well as a strike bowler.......................

I dunno heater the stories coming out of the SACA off field behaviour by senior players are pretty damning and not befitting a high performance culture.

Like it not this isn't the 80s anymore and players being paid peanuts and two longnecks at the end of each day play curtesy of the sponsor....

You want the coin you have to perform and no-one in the SACA 1st XI can really say they have performed at their optimim over the last season and a half. YES people may have been guns in the past but they still need to set an example on and off the field.

Remember the bloke making the call has done more than anyone in the SACA set up cricket wise and not one individual in SA over the past 20 years can look him in the eye and say I've done more than you in cricket. He has realised that the drinking culture in cricket finished 20 years ago (and he was one of the biggest) and it has been replaced with one of hard work and dedication to the little things such as ice baths, gut runs, and skinfold tests.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Cricket isn't AFL or athletics. Going to either of those extremes is dangerous. Finding the right balance between ice baths and beer on ice is the way to go IMO. And in the end it's very much an individual game played as a team sport so that has to be catered for as well. The only person who has "high performance" at the SACA in recent years is Boof and given the opportunity he might have been the one to turn the SACA's fortunes around. It's always easy in hindsight, but the choices they made for this year have been a disaster so far.

That's fine in theory but what if most times its the other States choosing ice baths and our lads are choosing beer?

Why are we so far behind everyone else we still have 4 current and former test players in our line up compared to only 1 for Vic and Tas?
