Name the bloke who is the better option then.

If I must choose a spin bowling option then I would choose Steve Smith.
Now I know it would be better for his education to take more wickets for NSW, but he is a much better fielder and batsman, already has better best bowling figures than Hauritz and they both have 1st class bowling averages in the 40's so why not pick him.
Plus he was born on June the 2nd and that date has history of producing great test cricketers. :)

Better of picking Cameron Shite. At this point in time Shite is a better batsman than Smith, probably of equal value in the field given his incredible hands in the slips and his bowling is the same. Going forward Smith will almost certainly become a much better bowler but the Australian side is not a development squad. You pick the best eleven avalaible not the best eleven on potential.

Rod, I respect and appreciate your response.
Was Shane Warne, Steve Waugh or Glen McGrath in the best Xl available when picked ?
I think not.
They developed as youngsters thrown into the deep end by having potential and playing test cricket.
Was Hauritz part of the best Xl when picked? I doubt it, his performances previously in test cricket and at 1st class level are poor.
I'm not saying that Smith will turn out to be as good as the names mentioned above but surely he already has more ability than Hauritz.

AU 0/67
WATSON 50*
Southee overpitched and Wattos stright drives him for 4 whatta shot
WATTO LBW VETTORI this morning and then the 3rd ump gave him not out
That decision may have cost NZ the test match

AU 1/85
WATSON out hooking SOUTHEE 65
2 men on the legside fence and he ...
Did his job
Almost up to 1000 runs as an opener, averaging mid fifties
Considering he has made only one ton thats an imposing average

AU should get 300-400 runs and win this Test

Over 47.6: Arnel to Hussey, six runs, worked off the hip to Southee at long leg, McCullum takes it and fires it off to the bowlers end and with no one backing up they get six - dear me shocking stuff from the BlackCaps there

Interesting way to get a six.

Brilliant innings by the Kat, good partnership here with Huss as well.

Nice to see him finally get to 3 figures as well as he has been close a few times lately. He just keeps racking up the runs.

Mr Snicket!!!! Blewy summed up the problem well when commentating how he has the angled bat and is susceptible when drawn outside off stump.

That is the score at stumps.

Huss and Kat put on 150, then both were dismissed quickly but North and Pup put on another 80 odd.

Excellent stuff, this is how we should have batted in the first dig!
