Harris harbours England hopes

Ryan Harris made an immediate impression with county champions Sussex as 14 wickets tumbled on the opening day of the first-class season.

The 28-year-old, one of 10 foreign cricketers to be cleared for county action in the past 24 hours, took three wickets and claimed a run out as the MCC closed on 130 for four, a deficit of 41 at Lord's.

Technically, he is now viewed as an Englishman himself, although he will take four years to qualify for international recognition.

"It is a big career move," said Harris, whose previous trips to Lord's, including the World Cup final in 1999, were as a spectator. "My sole objective is to play here at Sussex this year and do really well. Who knows from there?

"I have not looked too far ahead. If I take enough wickets and score enough runs other things will take care of themselves.

"That has been my attitude in Australia and I am going to follow that over here. I have signed up for two years with Sussex, whatever happens from there happens.

"If it goes on further, great. I am hoping it does. If it doesn't then maybe somewhere else. With regards to playing back in Australia, I am not sure about that yet.

"If I do it will be as an overseas player, so whether or not a state would do that is something I am still working on now."

Ryan Harris averages:
Career: 26 matches - 740 runs at 18.04, 67 wickets at 37.00
2007-08: 10 matches - 363 runs at 24.20, 37 wickets at 29.26 (great season no question)
Pre 2007-08: 16 matches - 377 runs at 14.49, 30 wickets at 46.55

Looks similar to one N Adcock this time last year? Average career then suddenly a good season. Or is he genuinely on an upward path now as he approaches 30.

Not trying to diss the guy ... just posing the question for the posters closer to the action than I .... is it the end of the world if he wants to chase some fun in the sun?

For the record - I definitely hope he stays

Well as I have said before, he is the only player that actually deserves his spot. So yeah with out him it is all doom and gloom. Simply because because besides him could you actually pick 11 blokes that deserve a spot?

Well if Harris is gone thenwith Dizz gone we are really done a few seamers. Clearey and Tait (pretty sure he'll be there next season) and maybe putland to get a gig in for 4 day and one day team. Also with harris out (assuming he is gone) we will need another bowling allrounder to step up. I guess play 3 seamers and Bailey will be the bowling allrounder. As for actual batsmen that deserve a gig, well I cant really think of any. Ferguson maybe at times and also Dan Harris at times but well thats it.

Hopefully for his sake, Cleary gets a regular gig this year, i believe his is good enough to be a starter every game. Am a fan of his bowling which i think is very under rated and can whoosh the willow when needed.

Graham Manou hopes South Australia will appoint their captain soon to establish the group ahead of the new season. He would love the job and believes a fast appointment would stabilise a unit already missing the retired players Darren Lehmann, Jason Gillespie, Matthew Elliott and fast bowler Ryan Harris, who has gone to Queensland.
"If they offer it to me I would be glad to take it on," Manou told the Adelaide Advertiser. "It would be nice to have the role at the start of the season."
There's a good chance both of his wishes will be granted. Coach Mark Sorell said last week Manou was the "stand-out" candidate having filled in as leader for the remainder of last season after Nathan Adcock was axed. Sorell is also keen to seal the deal quickly to avoid a repetition of the pre-season uncertainty last year in appointing the captain late, which set the tone for a troubled campaign.
Manou, who also took over when Darren Lehmann was playing for Australia in 2004-05, would relish having the captaincy full-time rather than being a fill-in. "Having a whole season to stamp your mark would sit a lot easier with me," said Manou. "Given what has happened over the past 12 months the sooner we can settle as a group and start to focus where we think we should be going, that will be great."
In the meantime, Manou will play for Darwin grade side PINTS for the next two months where he will hope to build on a successful season with South Australia, where he made 596 Pura Cup runs at 37.25.

dan harriss should stick to translating his natural talents with the bat he can dominate grade cricket but like so many has not clicked at first class level. the named blokes who bowl a little bit wouldnt even qualify as a bandaid for a bullit wound, there are genuine bowlers floating around the grade traps, how can chadd sayers still only be given a rookie contract??? 2 runner ups in bradman medals not enough to prove he is about as good there is in the grade system? an all rounder who is consistently having good season is matthew weeks could find himself around the traps at the loony bin again genuine allrounder seems to consistently be either taking wickets or making runs. letting harris go was the worst thing the spuds heirachy has done to date
