Down the Hill wrote:I’ve been away so missing some of the bleating of KG etc. about the shield final being at AO. But I’ve had some time for a bit of research and wondering if anyone in the media has stated the FACTS about shield finals for at least the last 15 years. I.e. I don’t believe any have been played at an AFL venue. QLD have hosted at least their last 3 at Allan Border. NSW have only hosted one for many years and that was at Manuka. VIC have either hosted at Junction or neutral (Alice Springs & Hobart). And SA of course hosted at Glenelg which was before Karen Rolton became fully developed. I thought KR was built for this exact situation. So why can’t people except that grounds like the MCG, SCG, AO & the Gabba will ever host a shield final again unless they change the domestic schedule to enable the final to be played late February.

Ed and Corbin also discussed this on the Grandstand Cricket Podcast on Monday and like you have pointed out having the Shield Final at an alternate venue to the main test match venues is a common occurrence in the recent past.

Why do people want it at AO?
Surely Karen Rolton Oval is big enough for the crowd that will attend.

If SACA won shields more regularly I wouldn't care where it was played.. but this is an opportunity that doesn't come around all that often, and hopefully this is our year.

Adelaide Oval for the win.. f**k the Crows, make them play at the Bay

Understand your point but AO is the home of cricket in SA where games have been played for over a century.

It deserves to be played at AO.

They are playing North Melbourne, crowd could fit at Ingle Farm.

But Karen Rolton Oval was updated to play these sort of games there.
Shield cricket unfortunately doesn’t have the following it did when we were growing up.
I like the atmosphere of packed smaller grounds compared to empty stadiums.

Would we get more than 5k on any one day at the final?

Much likelier to be a bigger crowd at AO rather than KR. KR is pretty ordinary and way harder to get to than AO. I think they'll get a fair few filtering in in the afternoon if it's at AO.

KRO doesn't have a permanent fence nor any outer banks for the crowd to watch.

Last time, the final was in Adelaide at Glenelg Oval was packed and the Footy club almost sold out of West End by close of play day 1. Mind you, that was an Easter Saturday

Crows wanted to be financially compensated to move the shield final back to AO.

Probably not a surprise in todays 'everything is a business' world we live in.

Actually sounds like it is the AFL to cover the extra costs of getting the ground ready so quick.

I think AO's proximity to the railway station and bus routes means it's pretty much the best location possible. KR isn't too bad but it's on the edge of the CBD and I think many would see it as a bit out of the way, even if it is only a couple of tram stops.

I went to Glenelg Oval when we played the Vics in the final a few years ago and there was a fair crowd there, bumped into many people I knew.
