Nearly every state would be very happy to have him, make no mistake about that. It will be very interesting to see what happens with a few posters when he starts scoring some big scores (Which he will, this year or next).

See that's the thing. I have no doubt Watto is capable of making runs (particularly at first class level). He would also acquit himself reasonably well at Test level with the bat. Problem is there are a heap of batsmen in Australia who are much better than him. Is he good enough to play Test cricket as a batsman? For most countries yes, for Australia no.

His bowling is rubbish though. This is what frustrates me and most people who are Watto detractors. He has been given so many opportunities at International level based on Australia trying to unearth a great all-rounder. Well here's a tip, Watto aint ever going to be that great all-rounder. He may well be a very good batsman but he needs to give his bowling away and forget about being an all-rounder. If he can then do well enough with the bat he might even be able to force his way into the Aussie side as a batsman. I doubt it though.

I think you have hit it on the head R-R

Soley as a batsman he is very good but prob not good enough to make Australia's top 6 with that alone

So he persists with his bowling to get the all-rounders spot and now this season has tried opening to grab the spare opener's spot - with neither going well. Maybe he should just focus on his batting and see where that takes him. Maybe he'll take up wicket keeping next seeing as Gilly is getting on

Mike Hussey tells an interesting story of his experience pre-Aussie days - he said when he stopped obsessing about playing for Australia (and in so doing losing his enjoyment for the game) and just went out and enjoyed playing for WA he suddenly had a form jump and next thing he knew he was in the Aussie side! I think Watto is trying too hard because his talent is clearly much better than his results this season would suggest.
In between signatures .....

How quickly people forget a man who was only out once in the
last World Cup tournament in the West Indies.
Thank goodness he got out in the final, at least he obtained an average in W/Cup cricket.

NFC this is your XMAS present

WORLD CUP 2006/2007
8 MATCHES
6 INNINGS
5 NOT OUTS
145 RUNS
65 *[32 BALLS] HIGHEST SCORE
AVERAGE 145-0

Shane Robert Watson
Born 17/06/81 [I looked in my diary and had sex in France that day although different dates ?]
Bradman cricketer of the year 2002
Made a P/Cup double century in a final

O/D career for Australia

65 GAMES
47 INNINGS
18 NOT OUTS
79 HIGHEST SCORE
7 X 50S
AVE 34-57

For a batsman to have figures like that batting predominantly at 7 is a great achievement

So WATT-OOOO
is also
145 WATTS in World Cup cricket

I will refrain from discussing his o/d bowling stats
62 wickets
ave 34-11
as he is just an ordinary bowler

Oh but i am a detractor locky. I enjoy seeing Watto fail time and time again because it means that players who deserve a shot far more than he won't have to put up with being overlooked continually in favour of him. That said he can bat but just not as well as a number of others around the country. He also is not an openers ar5ehole.

Care to regurgitate his 1st class stats.....need to be carefull when quoting stats especially if you don't include them all, especially current ones.

Hey 12 months ago I was a Watson fan and understood his inclusion in the test team (didn't necessarily agree with it but understood it)

However now-days you couldn't include him in a fit as he tries to make it as an opener.

I still rate him as a cricketer, but no-way is he even on the radar of test selection ATM
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Just reminded a few people about his exploits in O/D cricket
He has never been a regular test player[2-3 tests]
FIRST CLASS stats
As for his poor efforts in p/cup this season it has destroyed his near 50 average to a mere 45 odd

Going on current form, Jason Gillespie should be classed ahead of Shane Watson as an all-rounder.
