Johan Botha

Postby the joker » Thu Apr 05, 2012 10:52 pm

Lot of people annoyed that Max got the arse. The redbacks have had their worst three years in their shield history, his batting has been exceptional, his captaincy not so much. Botha will be a great pick up, remember he has been captain of one of the top three teams in the world.

Only captain of the ODI and T20 side. Dont think he has ever captained a side in the longer format, not even for his provincial side. And we all know how the Saffers turn to water in big tournaments

Botha will be the equivalent of a consistent Aaron O'Brien... Epic fail SACA.

Think this will end up being a pleasant surprise as he has one of best brains in world of cricket and think he will be good enough with the bat and ball.

They should be giving opportunities to young SA players. Not bringing in one day cricket has beens.

Yep let's give Cam Williams some game time when he is clearly not up to standard yet.....

I still think we should have chased some Australian talent before looking overseas.

plenty of other talent besides Williams

Selectors have to open their eyes and look in the lower grades at some young talent

Sorry all, been a while, but thought I would place a different slant on this whole argument. Firstly Botha to TTG - thanks done deal (lol).

We have over a number of years been recruiting some average interstate cricketers and giving them contracts. Didn't Chuck say somewhere that he was more interested in given local talent a go, and hey presto, last few games, that happened.

We must realise that any decent, top international cricketer has a full calendar and hence we cannot recruit any of them. So we go to the next level. Botha impressed in his short T/20 form with SACA, seemingly having a passion to play for SA. He obviously impressed those in the halls of power with his leadership. He is 29 which is not over the hill, he can play the three versions for us and be very handy. Remember South African first class cricket is as ruthless as Aus. To average mid 30's with the bat, places him equal with Ferg does it not.

So I say, let's give this some space and see if Chuck gets his way in the corridors of SACA. I have posted this before but remember these names
Inverarity, Crowe. J, Wright - all members of SA winning shield team in 81/82 - all former test cricketers from another state / country.

Siddons, McIntyre, Brayshaw - all members of SA winning shield team in 95/96 - three very decent shield cricketers, all from interstate.

So I say to SACA, recurit top end, surround them with our good locals and give peace a chance.

Look, I would love Botha to have a 1000 run season and take 50 wickets. Truly, I would be stoked. Even happier if he leads us to a Shield victory.
Just don't think it'll happen.

Half of that would be a win 25 wickets and 500 runs. Add George 30 wickets, Putland 30 wickets. Mennie 25 wickets. Ferguson,Cooper, Klinger,Head. 3 of them have 500 run seasons. He may add that stability Sth Aus havent had.

His bowling was unimpressive, there is a reason he hasn't played a first class game for three years

One game... give him a chance. His selection may or may not prove to be a good one, but he needs more than one game to prove it. A total embarrassment in the first game may prove to be just what is needed for him to see what is wrong.
