Yeah totally agree. Ponting doesnt get the credit he deserves. Tendulkar is great but all of the Indians averages are over inflated because they play on postage stamp size grounds on batsmen friendly pitches for 3/4's of their matches. If the boundries were in 30 mtrs on Aussie grounds punter would have passed 14000 runs years ago. Id also like to take out ammount of runs v sri lanka and bangladesh and it would bring him back to the field a little. Id take Lara and Punter over Tendulkar. Sachin should have far more double centuries than he does and thats what was great about Lara, he would just push on and get BIG scores.

Seriously.

Will he ever stop?

Passed 14K of runs, has played more Tests than anyone.

Player of the year, averaged about 80...

I am in awe.

Challenge for Mr Spell Check. ;)

If The Don had played the same amount of test matches as the tally Sachin Tendulkar currently has, how would their test careers compare ?

As an afterthought why dont the Aussies doctor their pitches? Everyone else does it. When India comes to Aus id have all the pitches bouncy green tops and play 4 paceman. Watch the likes of Tendulkar and Dravid play on a deck that does something and have balls wizz around their ears.

Sachin v Bangladesh 7 matches 820 runs 248* high score 136.66 average 5 hundreds
Sachin v Sri Lanka 25 matches 1995 runs 203 high score 60.45 average 9 hundreds

I'm no Spelly, but Don played 52, I think, Tests, for 6996 runs.

Times that by three, and Don has 156 tests, 20994 (i think) runs. Consider uncovered pitches too.

If the Don was playing now against the likes of Zimbabwe and Bangladesh on covered pitches he would have about 40000 runs :D

Easy maths with him because of the average.

Lets say 150 Tests, 100 runs per innings, most of the time should have only had to bat once (i.e. innings victory), theres 15000 already...

Getting off topic- Don certainly deserves his own thread, but simply said, he was a freak, and his stats are not comparable with anyone else.

He played in 80 innings, 11 of those not out.

Assuming his average died down a little, say to 6996/80 which is 87.45; he still would have made 23874 runs over the 273 innings Tendulkar played in prior to this match.

And it's no surprise after a big partnership, another wicket falls.

I'd much rather see Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting, bat in the 1930's than see Don in the 2000's.

Yeah, that would be fun - not. :) Probably had some net sessions on the boat or something. Two months on a boat would drive me crazy just about.

It would be interesting to see how the elite batsmen today would do in the 30s, although big scores still happened in that era anyway, so it can't have been too hard.

Yeah your right, sri lanka are a pretty poor test nation. only ranked 3rd/4th in the world, possess the world record holder for wickets taken (rightly or wrongly) and possess some of the best batsmen (sangakkara, jayawerdene etc...) of the modern game. They really are an easy team to beat and tendulkars runs against would have been easy to get.

Turn it up! Tendulkar's a champ!

Half the blokes were out on the piss the night before they bowled to Viv, Pollock etc. ;)

Ponting does not put much faith in newcomers. And as a postscript, well done on 3000 posts. :)

I didnt mean sri lankan is a poor team, I was referring to the fact their grounnds are smaller and more batsmen friendly than indias

That is very true.
I remember Taits 1st test in England and we were defending a low total and badly in need of wickets.
Tait rarely got a look in and some bowlers were into their 2nd and 3rd spells before he got the ball.

2005 Ashes - good times on FootySA. ;)

Yes, that's correct. There's another option to choose but he doesn't use it. Fair enough at this stage of the day with fading light, but all those overs he used the other two pace bowlers and your favourite Hauritz when neither of them were getting anywhere.
