Still dont know. Maybe he was a bit before my time.

John Emburey was an English spinner who had a nagging line and length and could be quite difficult to get away. He was also a stubborn bugger to remove in the lower order unlike many English tailenders of recent times. Emburey is perhaps best remembered for the 'fall down sweep shot' which displayed on more than one occasion. Emburey was a key player of the Ashes winning 1986/87 combination.

Phil Emery was a stocky New South Welshman who played just the one test as his career coincided with the superior Ian Healy. Like Emburey Emery batted in the lower order (both number seven or eight bats) but was the more agressive batsman. Emery may be best remembered as being the reason why Gilly went West. Gilly couldn't dislodge Emery who was one of the senior Blues and of course the rest is history. Emery had a fine career for NSW and played in multiple shield wins.

I don't disagree that Cooper is a good batsman. What has he done though? Why would you pick him ahead of Phil Hughes? Why would you pick Broad ahead of Phil Hughes? Can you provide a decent argument why you would pick any of the players you mentioned (apart from Katich, Hayden and Jaques) ahead of Phil Hughes?

hughes and cooper in 4 day games in australia

hughes
2007/2008
559 runs @ 62-11
made his first 100 in a pura cup final as a teenager

hughes
2008/2009
809 runs @ 67-4
4
0
198
1
86
9
22
93
108
114
23
151

has been converting starts into tons, something Aussie selectors need to look at
outstanding junior averaging in the 60s which is senstional for an opening batsman

cooper
2008/2009
10 runs @ 10

was run out on debut so has not been dismissed by a bowler as yet
outstanding junior in slogathons and 50 over games
but has not had a chance to prove himself in the longer game

Hughes is also a handy keeper as well ? that would be a plus if selected for South Africa

Pidge
as Rodrooster has suggested we cant compare the 2 stars as yet

one more factor on hughes
when Hayden was struggling[then retired] and the competition for a spot for the taking, have a look at Phils last few innings this season

NFC, even you and i agree on this one. Hughes needs to be playing cricket for Australia. He has done absolutely everything right and then some. Will be a star.

I would gives Hughes a run, whats the worst that could happen. Hopes is the furtherest thing from a batsmen let alone and opener, we cant afford to move Haddin due to our piss poor middle order and Hussey is just starting to find form batting down the order. So hey why the hell not.

If he's in the mix for a test spot then he's better off playing Shield cricket as preparation instead of flying around the country playing a few ODI's ... arguably pointless ODI's (when compared to playing test cricket v RSA and England)

There's a bigger picture

Jaques back is still crook and the drums are beating now for Hughes. It will be a remarkable story once he is selected, an even more remarkable story if he can go on and succeed. There will be a lot of pressure on Hughes when he gets his Baggy Green, just have a look at how Warner is travelling.

Fortunately, Hughes is the better player.

Yep, the Kat won't score at eight an over but he'll last longer than eight overs. It's not as though he is keeping a Matty Hayden out of the side these days. I'm still scratching my head by his non-inclusion in the team. He's getting the Michael Slater treatment here.

Agreed we could do plenty worse. He is in good form so lets make the most of it.

Phil Hughes got another ton overnight, 119 off 112 balls in 50 over match.
he scored more runs than Don Bradman did in his first three games in England

i hope he carries this form into the ashes.

He's apparently rated so highly by England that in the recent Test series they had a policy of not wasting a "referral" on him, as they were confident of getting him out anyway.

I'd back Jacques (the guy who supplanted him) to make more runs than Hughes.
