3RD TEST WI V AU

Postby mal » Wed Jun 04, 2008 1:20 pm

2 MATCHES
AU 1
WI 0
DR 0

The 2nd test was the first draw AU/WI since 1995 !

First of all I am absolutely stunned at the finale of the 2nd test match
WI 5/266
Ricky Ponting has agreed to call of the game off with 5 overs to go
30 legitimate deliveries to be bowled and the Australian captain gives up
Surely there is a slight chance of still bowling the Windies out ?

3RD TEST TEAM

MACGILL retired
KAT unavailable ???

Logic suggests they will be replaced by
HODGE
CASSON

HUSSEY to open and HODGEY in the middle order no problem
But CASSON is the problem
He is a part time spinner who bats OK for NSW, good luck to him but his selection is a gift
Personally I would play the 4th quick and give Douggie BOLLINGER a baggy green
BOLLINGER is a far far far far superior bowler to CASSON

I agree with this call too Mal. If it were a match being played on the subcontinent, by all means play Casson. However, in the Windies they should be looking to play another quick. Symonds & Clarke can provide highly servicable spin if required.

However, fast bowling ranks aren't exactly a problem right now like spin ranks - so selectors might be inclined to give Casson a go, in what really is (in the context of losing/retaining the Worrell Trophy) a dead rubber.

Give Douggie a run.

casson will play. they need a spinner. and Magiller got 1 for more than 200 so casson should do better than that

Look forward to the banter. As long as Watson isn't relied on for his bowling then i have no problem.

Agree with u on this one Mal.
They've just played 5 days so what is another 5 overs?
Anything could have happened like when Aust snatched a Very unlikely victory over India last summer and who knows that TIFFIN wasn't about to have another Brain explosion and give a Flurry of dismissals like the 1st innings?
To me it is just a sign of giving up which Australia has built a reputation of NOT doing.

JACKPOT JIM well posted
AU is highly unlikely to get 5 wickets in 5 overs
BUT
by bowling the last 5 overs a bowling side has almost everything to gain
AND THE BALL WAS VERY NEWISH only about 10 overs old !

As JJ said after 5 days of cricket whats another 5 overs

WHAT MAY HAVE HAPPENED [purely speculatively]

No more wickets fell, no damage
AU get Champyrpaul out, stopping him being not out out twice
RAMDIN 0 + not out helps him, but 0 + 25 odd + out makes it a bad test for him
JOHNSON who comes outa this test with poor returns, may have got a another wicket to boost his confidence
MACGILL to bowl a couple more overs + a wicket or 2 ,but now he finishes with about 0/80 odd

Or how about Brett Lee takes 3 wickets in an over and Michael Clark takes 2 wickets in the 2nd last over of the day
THAT HAS HAPPENED IN TEST CRICKET !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I was RAMDIN or CHAMPYPAUL I would have been relieved not to face 5 extra overs
The batsman have little to gain, the bowlers a lot more to gain

Sorry for the Pontiing fans
BUT
Ricky Ponting is a GOOSE

Don't think you are going to get too many arguments mal. To be honest until there are less balls left than wickets needed i can't ever see the justification for calling it off.

5 wickets might have changed the outcome :-k Can you say categorically that there is no way 5 wickets could've fallen in 30 balls? Sure unlikely, very very unlikely in fact, but you can't win if you don't try.

5 WICKETS IN 30 BALLS

Joker I will make one suggestion to you
How many times in Test cricket have 5 wickets fallen in 30 balls ?
If its happened once in history then thats enough reason to bowl out the overs

I played a lot of cricket albeit in minor cricket competitions and as a skipper I had a philosophy
NEVER DIE WONDERING
Yep you play the game out
Anything is possible
As Rod said if its mathematically possible you try and win
FFS they play about 30 hours of cricket in 5 days whats another 20 minutes
In sport theres an old saying
THE HARDER YOU TRY THE LUCKIER YOU GET

QUESTION
Why did the WI agree to call the game off ?

It wasn't that long ago that Michael Clarke took 3 wickets in one over to win a Test for Australia :-k

What about giving the 200 paying spectators that were there their moneys worth by providing a FULL days play?
When was the last time a Footy match was called off at 3/4 time bcos one team was 20 goals in front and the result couldn't change?

In all fairness to Ricky Ponting
He may have wanted to ease the burden on his bowlers
After all there is ONLY a 9 day break between the 2nd and 3rd tests...

Well Im trying to be objective for reasons for calling off this game.
Perhaps if I keep thinking long enough I might think of a better reason why.

I'm still spewing that Punter didn't give Gilly a bowl in his last test, the game was dead, it would've given the public something to smile about after watching a day of nothing to go home with , I remember seeing Rod Marsh have a bowl when he was ending his career, he mimicked Dennis Lillee.

At least he would've had a bowling stat of some description.

Was it getting dark and they could only bowl spinners? (i didnt see the finish to the game)

Even if the above was the case you would still bowl them out..staggering really
