SA Redbacks season 08/09 and 09/10

Postby Footy Smart » Mon Dec 22, 2008 2:11 pm

Ok thought I would start a fresh thread.

What are the positives of season 08/09 so far?

What are the negatives of season 08/09 so far?

Looking forward what should happen to the squad in 09/10 to see it improve? Raid other states further/develop our talent?

Need more bowling depth, saying that one of Cullen or Bailey need to move or be moved on. Will possibly see more of Tait, but underneath him still a little fragile.

Batting
- Has improved. A bit more backbone now, though the last Shield match suggests otherwise. Klinger and Ferguson have had much improved seasons.
- Still relying on too few to do too much. Klinger is consistently scoring runs but other players are making them in fits and spurts for the most part. If Maxy gets injured we are stuffed.

Bowling
- Haven't let games get away as often as in the past. Peter George appears to be a good young bowler.
- Like with the batting, too reliant on too few. When Tait isn't playing, the attack slips back in quality and wickets become harder to get.

not sure about that.......maybe they just need to pi55 off their bowling coach. He might have had sucess with Warne but he was a once in a generation freak. DC bowls far too flat and should try tossing* it up there more. not sure what to say on Bails beacuse everytime I see him bowl he has changed his action

We certainly need to find a 2nd strike bowler for when Tait is unavailable.

possitive is Callum Ferguson, if he keeps scoring runs over the next 3 to 5 years he could take Clarkes spot at 5 in the test team when ponting retires and clarke goes to 3.
also Khan is speaking to the Pakistan team about coming back next year

Clarke would be more suited to 4 than 3 and Ferguson, whilst he has the talent is a long long long way off being considered for higher honours.

agree, IMO clarke wont bat three for australia in tests, at the highest he will bat 4... i would think there will be another number three ready by the time ponting leaves and if there is not m.hussey could always fill the void for the last bit of his career until someone else is ready for it.
TJ did state if he keeps scoring runs, and if he does and converts his starts more often he will be considered a chance in 4 years time..

SA 08/09 (so far):

Positives:
- Klinger, Harris, Ferguson and Khan all making runs, although the latter three need to be more consistent.
- Tait bowling well when fit. Cleary & Cullen going OK but need to be more consistent also.
- Good vibe about the team, Manou is captaining well. I definitely don't expect the Redbacks to turn their last few seasons around in one year, but this year has shown many positive signs and allround improvment.

Negatives:
- Take Klinger and Tait out of our line-up and it looks very shakey, too much reliance on too few.
- Cosgrove's demise & demotion.
- No cover for the loss of Ryan Harris found. Harris has now been touted as a possible inclusion in the Test side by Ponting. Whether or not this would have happened had he stayed in SA, I don't know; but in my mind however, this is probably the biggest player loss SA has ever suffered. Was by many a mile our best player last year. He took crucial wickets at crucial times during both SS and FR last year, was extremely economical and probably brought about a few extra wickets for Tait & Cullen due to his pressure.
Also his lower order batting was very handy on occasions.

Good post, but i think harris and ferguson are both consistent with scores between 30-70 both probably need to get bigger scores.
Tait has not bowled well at all in the SS. it would be interesting to see his statistics for the year, they would be average if we looked at them.
Cleary i think has been great, i think he has improved and taken on more responsibility. I think he has bowled extremely well.
Agree with everything else tho.

Positives-
We are starting to recruit quality characters who want to strive and succeed at Shield Level, not has beens.

The young players like Ferguson and Cooper are starting to stand up, i think it's no suprise their form is improving now with the likes of Khan and Klinger in the squad.

The batting has got some backbone now, gone are the days of being bowled out in the Shield for 90-140 runs.

Negatives-

Mark Cosgrove

Shaun Tait lack of passion for the 4-day game can't be the best attitude to have around the rest of the squad.

The captaincy issue, is kind of going around in circles again with Manou at the helm, he is only a few bad innings away from the same rubbish coming up again. IMHO sign Khan to a 2-year contract and give him the captaincy seems like the perfect fit.
