WARNNNEY-CHAPPELI-GILLY AND JB

Postby mal » Thu Dec 27, 2007 5:50 pm

Shane Warne a man I respect on the field
Ian Chappell a legend on and off the field
But do we need these 2 superstars of the past to sledge other cricketers/people ?
SW is having a cracks at Gilly , which whether true or false is unwarranted.
To criticise guys like Gilly is frought with danger he is way to popular in the eyes of many.
What starts on the field and in the dressing rooms or whatever should be kept there.
To call John Buchanan things for his absurd comments to give away our cricketers etc
to other countries is warranted but a tad over-reactive in calling him names as well.
Both IC + SW have given JB a spray about him.[considering his coaching record hmmmmn.]
JB did make a stupid comment, but why drag his coaching etc into the subject.

I am losing respect for former players who mingle in the press in this manner
Neil Harvey is another that has lost the respect of a later generation of cricketers
with his controversial comments in the press in the past.

Why tarnish distinguished playing careers with at times irreversible comments in the press.

As for GILchrist leave him alone I wouldnt care what he has alledgedly done.

With Chappelli, he did explain his comments on the cricket show, in which he was saying that the wins and losses are more down to the players than the coach.

Didnt someone say a teenage girl or something could have coached the team for the same success ?
Was it Chappelli ?

On Adam Gilchrist
That was his friend that died in Perth in that thuggery on a WA beach.
Also the guy is a really truly great guy, he has put all that behind him
and gone out with his pink gloves in the First Test v India for charity
He is being sponsored at $18,000 a catch for the Mcgrath Cancer Foundation.
The great man took 4 catches and $72 k raised[he needs 1 more catch for the
most disMissALs for an oz keeper ?]

When other former cricketers sledge a guy like this the public will ultiMATEly
turn against the protagonist.

Warne = Harvey.

The way he's going.
Rodney Hogg's another one.

I love Warney as a cricketer, but what's he thinking?

As for Chappelli - he acted quite disingenious when given the chance to comment before play yesterday. As if saying that his daughter could have coached the side to those wins wasn't having a crack at Buchanan and his methods. I guess at least he's consistent, he's always said stuff like this about coaches. I wonder what he would have said if it had been his brother coaching them through that success....

I do, Chappelli has always taken an anti-coach view (I don't necessarily agree with it), He did qualify it yesterday by saying no, his daughter couldn't have done better but that she would have had the same influence aqs a coach i.e. she would have taken the same anount of catches and wickets and made the same amount of runs as Buchannen did. Chappelli also said players deserve the credit for wins they also deserve the criticism when they lose.

can anyone recall Ian Chappell criticising Buchannen when they lost, nup he always has blamed the players and especially the captain.

When we lose the media love to criticise the players (easy target something obvious to talk about) when we win it is whip up internal conflict or the Ugly Australians line....

there maybe smoke D/W but the media provide the accelerant for the fire.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

A well made point.
I guess it's all hard to judge on the win/loss aspect, as when was the last time we lost consistently...

I remember Warne coming out when the team was criticized by former players when he was playing and he was far from impressed, yet now he is doing the same. Great cricketer but not so sure about some of his other qualities.

& when he does you won't see Healy for dust, the way he shrills with delight every time Gilchrist makes a blue & carries on about it for the next two hours will ensure that self appointed greatest ever wicket keeper the universe has known will be in the back rooms kicking the dunny doors in.

He said his daughter could have coached them and the same result would happen. I believe in trying to make his point he added that comment which took the article in the wrong direction.

Well said Tassie ... Chappelli has always been a players first man, but also never one to let them off scot-free when they haven't been up to it.

I think Warney's article in the Tiser yesterday put some of it back into perspective ... Blokes like he and Chappelli just tell it as they see it, often this can be in a blunt manner (or reported in such a way).

Both guys are astute cricket judges and were onfield giants, and their penchant for honest assessment probably has a lot to do with that success.

Agree RR, thought Ian Healy was great in that interview, having met the man and had a drink or 27 with him, I found a few comments made about him a little unwarranted. He is all class this guy and I am sure he is more than happy that he has been overtaken by a guy like Gilly
