Not only a great batsman but a quality bloke from all reports. Amazing that a nation the size of Sri Lanka have produced a modern great.

Was one bloke who could score runs in any situation. I remember when he nearly batted SL to an amazing win in Hobart on a tough, tough pitch for batting. Plenty of blokes averaging 50+ who padded stats with big scores on flat decks but struggled on lively pitches. Rate him the best modern opposition bat I've seen, ahead of Tendulkar. Gave an otherwise flaky Sri Lankan side a lot of backbone and will be a huge hole to fill for them.

Got 190 0dd that day didn't he? and was stiff to get out if my memory serves.

One of my favourite all time players. Absolute champion and went out on his own terms which is even better...
