Television ratings for the IPL have continued to fall in comparison to 2011, but observers say the IPL is still a "very successful media property" and when it comes to ratings, it has been a victim of its own initial success.

The average Television Viewer Ratings (TVR) for the first 16 games of 2012 was 3.65, down 8.75% from the average of 4.00 at the same point last season.

With a successful tour of the West Indies completed, Australia captain Michael Clarke has now shifted his focus to what will be his first stint at the IPL. Clarke is expected to arrive in India on April 30, to join his franchise, Pune Warriors. This will be something of a Twenty20 return for Clarke, who last played in the shortest format in October 2010.

"The crowds look fantastic [at the IPL] and it's going to be nice. To be honest with you, to be back playing some Twenty20 cricket, I'm looking forward to that. I've never been to the IPL. I've said for a long time that when the opportunity comes up and I feel that it's right for me, I'd love to get over there and have a crack and see what it's like," Clarke said after the Dominica Test. "I am looking forward to it. We [Australia] have a good break this winter. I've only got two one-day tours the whole winter, so if I was ever going to go this is the opportunity."

Mitchell Johnson, the Australia allrounder, has been ruled out of this year's IPL as he has not yet recovered from a surgery on his big toe. Johnson had been bought by Mumbai Indians for $300,000 in the February player auction. A team spokesperson confirmed his unavailability.

There would be some interest if it were still on TV.

The Deccan Chargers franchise is one formal step away from losing its IPL status with its owners failing to produce, within the Friday evening deadline, the Rs 100-crore ($19 million) bank guarantee the Bombay High Court had set as the condition for the team's survival in the league. The failure to produce the bank guarantee meant that the court's status quo on the franchise's termination was automatically lifted, which leaves the BCCI free to invite bidders for a new franchise.
