And there lies the problem. I am willing to bet anyone who has the time would find that only Cooper has pass marks in the first dig, and I think even he has a better second innings record this year.

Tom Cooper 2011/2012 Sheffield Shield Stats

First Innings- 287 runs, 8 innings, HS- 98, Ave- 35.87
Second Innings- 395 runs, 7 innings, 1-no, HS-203*, Ave- 65.83

The problem with the tail is we have three blokes that should be batting at eleven. FFS how can you get that far through the system with techniques like those blokes

we can't have those three in the same team. George picks himself, and Mennie deserves to keep his spot, so Tiejtens shouldn't play

Cant believe this is even being discussed. The resonsablity of making runs is purely the top 6 to 8(max). Runs from the rest are valuable but shouldnt be necessary. Tietjens has bowled pretty well and deserves and part of a team that bowled out the Vics twice. He deserves his spot as much as the next bowler. To drop a Bowler because they arent a good batter?

Agree, doesn't make sense.
Can't complain about the efforts of the bowling attack in the last match.

A keeper should be able to bat reasonably as well as keep.

I agree with whats being said but remember if your number 9-10-11 are junk it doesnt give alot of time for your 6 and 7 who are reconginsed batsmen to build an innings especially if one of them goes early.

A bit like football where you essentially have 6 defenders. There primary role is to defend but for team balance, structure and chemistry you do need one or two of them who can win their own ball and attack.

Letting a hopeless number 11 score a half century, dear me.

Adam Gilchrist killed that for the average Joe keeper, the world's a different place now, even at club level.

Tim Davey made 150 for Tea Tree Gully yesterday. Surely he has to be a good chance to play the next Shield game.

Make up your mind what that says about him!

Will be interesting to see what value people put 1st innings runs compared to 2nd innings runs.

Good work whufc.
I guess the relative importance of 1st vs 2nd innings depends on each match situation. If the game is in the balance then 2nd innings runs can be more important. However, most (if not all) of Ferguson's 2nd innings scores were made with SA facing huge deficits with basically no chance of winning, so there is little pressure and relatively little benefit to the team if he bats well.

I think with the shield points system first innings is extremely more important. Because there is no points for a draw if u lose first innings generally the second dig is nothing more than trying to stop the opposition from gaining points rather than winning points yourself

Test cricket is completely different to shield cricket when comparing innings
