A space to analyse review and critique our bowling performance and the way forward for next year

Putland and George worth persisting with. Mennie was OK.
Started the year opening the bowling with Christian - not a first class opening bowler.
Disappointed with Richardson/Haberfield, look to have proimse but don't take wickets.
Spinners... Lyon gone. Cullen Bailey, O'brien no good. Do we have another look at Dan Cullen?

Joe Mennie was the startling stand out improver in South Australian cricket, from the start of the season being labelled (mainly by me) as an absolute pile of horse snot, 23 wickets at 26 is great.
Peter George started the season in fine wicket taking form, especially in first innings, but the lack of support, with Putland's injury, and before Mennie came of age, caused him to come to a screaming halt in later matches. Still our best full-time bowler. 31 wickets at 37, if he had full-time support, it would be good.
What can we say about Gary Putland? I know he makes Chuck Norris piss himself, but all jokes aside, after returning from injury, and before the injury, he was a threatening seam bowler, which we have been lacking. 19 wickets at 21 is great, just the five games though, if he gets himself on the park for a full season, I will be impressed.

Dan Christian is a more than useful fifth bowler, but not a strike bowler by any measure.

Only Sayers amongst the rest looked like he would be capable of Shield standard bowling, and he isn't quite there yet.

I'm not sure how much longer we need to realise T Kelly isn't up to it. Didnt take WA long to work it out!

Would be far more accurate. It's not his job to create talent or teach someone everything about the game. He's there to tweak already good games and help blokes adjust to first class level.

Bowling hasn't been bad I guess, but far from a venomous attack. Lyon, Putland and George makes a reasonable lineup. Christian needs to either improve his batting and become a genuine 6 (or 7 if we get a top 6 class keeper/batsman) or really improve his bowling. I like him as a 5th bowling option, but not just yet as a part of the main 4 prong attack.

Whilst discussing the bowling, take the last Shield game in Brisbane. Qld had three bowlers who every time they bowled - the ball swung and moved sideways all the time. Not sure how much of the Qld batting you watched, but apart from Putland who swung the new ball appreciably, our bowlers were straight up and down. It is common knowledge that whatever level you play, if you swing the ball away from the bat, you will take wickets, we do not seem to be able to do that consistently. That is why I am not sure Mennie is the answer, he is a seamer and on Adelaide Road (oval) the ball does not seam. Would much prefer to go with a Sayers or a Tietjens who swing the ball away from the bat.
