That's not fair to everyone else, Watto's streets ahead of everyone in that department.

Ha, I reckon Lara's never been short of a possible shag either.

2 centuries in 52 knocks doesn't quite compare mate, nor does 49 wickets in 29 matches.

Correct, but McGrath and Warne couldn't bat and Lara and Tendulkar can't bowl. Watson is an elite all-rounder.

needs to be an elite batsman though batting at the top of the order. im sick of seeing him get caught flashing at balls outside off stump. would love to know how many times he has been caught between cover and gully

I dont think Watson is an elite all rounder yet. If he retires down the track with over 5000 Test runs and 150 test wickets then yes. But at this stage C.Gayle stats as a all rounder are better, and I dont class him as a elite all rounder.

Interesting discussions
A lot has rightly been said about Wattos inability to convert starts to tons with the bat
This is the case in Test Cricket
However
Every country in every era would absolutely jump for joy to have :
An opening batsman who averages close to 50
A change bowler who averages less than 30
WHEN he slumps to an opener who averages about 30 with the bat and averages about 40 with the ball, then we can then question his abilities
Im expecting that form lapse sooner than later at Test level

To have the same guy dominate in limited overs cricket makes Watto one of the more unique cricketers ever seen

Question, if Watto is not elite now, with his current stats, and he can't convert... What happens in a year or two when he really peaks, and every knock he is hitting fifties and hundreds, and every second match he's taking a Michelle???

Them he'd be elite.

Regardless of his all round form, he is opening bat for his country and needs to improve his conversion significantly to be considered elite. It's not that hard to work out, surely.

If we take purely statistics into the equation, then I ask the question, is a batting average of 52, and a bowling average of 26 an elite all-rounder? If we are looking only at stats?

Yes, I think so

Except his current test averages are 41.55 batting and 31.42 bowling

Did you mean his averages in all forms of the game or have I looked up the wrong stats?

Is Watto at the crossroads after a couple of amazing seasons ?
Yes
SAFOOTY iconic allrounder has a few too many distractions at present
Im tipping the pressure is getting to the great man
From about 2 seasons ago till now these might be factors in a possible and probable demise

VICE CAPTAIN
Allrounders in my opinion dont need responsibilty
Ian Botham became an England captain and lost all his form, when Mike Brearley took over, Ian excelled again
Quite simply Watto is trying to consolidate his career after 2 great seasons, does he need responsibility ?

MARRIED
Recently married
For those of us that are married we know what a transition that can be
Being away from his wife, for long periods of time can be iffy
The thought of starting a family is on their minds as well ?

INJURED
Currently struggling with a back problem
His first real injury concerns for a while
Will this effect his confidence, or playing ability ?
Will the past and present injuries play on his mind ?

WEIGHT
He has a solid build
His physique may hinder his bowling sooner than later
He has dropped in pace [for the better]
But if he begins to lose any more zip that could affect his bowling

50S
Too many 50s at Test Level, and not enough tons
This is a real concern
Fortunately his Test bowling, and limited overs form with bat and ball has masked this inability of conversion for the time being

NEW BOOK
The stress of perception when one has a book written about them can be a distraction of sorts

FOX SPORT + COMMERCIALS
2 good seasons and he has been spotlighted into the media
Too soon ?

ALLROUNDER
Opening the batting and being the allrounder is hard enough in the short term
Is it a long term solution ?
Will he cope if his form lapses ?

AGE
He is now 30 years old
Theres a lot of cricketers in any comp that worry that age will effect their form
For Watto theres the worry the body is deteriorating as he ages ?

NOW
I make this post now b4 a semi or complete form lapse happens
I really Hopes Im wronggg
But Im really concerned he has far too much on his plate on and off the field

FUTURE
Im really worried about his bowling as his body gives up on him, and perhaps more injuries
Watto is going to have to face the inevitable, an International career as a specialist batsman
Will he succeed, Im not sure at all
Time will tell

Personally i would love to see Watto give up the bowling and extend his career as an opening batsmen by a few years!

We're struggling to bowl out sides in Test cricket so that may not happen.
