First Class Cricket Talk (International and State)

A new contender.

Postby Booney » Sun Jan 21, 2007 9:40 am

With much said about Andre Nel and Graham Smith over the last couple of years as to who can lay claim to being the biggest d***head in international cricket.I think we have a new contender.

Debuting at the spritely age of 36 and giving the world an insight into Englands newly adopted "youth policy' ahead of the upcoming World Cup,Paul Nixon has this summer (well,in two one-dayers and a Twenty20) laid down a remarkable but no less creditable challenge to both Nel (good cop/bad cop) and Smith (advise on how to fail).

Perhaps I am being a little tough on the young bloke,he does have time on his side,I guess, giving him the chance to make a mark on the international scene over the coming years.Perhaps in time,I will come to appreciate his talents.

At any stage, feel free to exchange "Duncan Fletcher" for Nixon.

I could not agree more and Mike Hussey summed it up perfectly after we beat them at the GABBA.

I've always disliked wicketkeepers who gob off to excess and strut around as if they own the place, so obviously I'm not particularly enamoured of Nixon.

LOL. Good call Mr Boon. I still don't think Nel is a DH though, I reckon most of his gruff is bluff and that he is just a fierce competitor. My vote still goes to Smith. What a Goose.

Agree with you there. I liked the way he said that. He said hes not a walker. You think fricken Pieterson would walk? Doubt it. And Hussey summed up cricket well "i'll take the good with the bad decisions"

Has anyone else noticed how Nixon (at 36 yrs old) still gets fundamental parts of wicketkeeping wrong?

When the ball is struck to the on-side,square leg say,Nixon ends up on the on-side of the stumps.Stumps behind him,as opposed to holding his ground behind them waiting on the throw.Watch the way Gilly goes about it,and Nixon on Friday night.

His footwork is non-existant when going to the leg side of the right handed batsmen.Just takes a massive leap.

And a few of his,sayings.

"Coom'on luds"
"Best in the business Monty" (WTF?)
"Freddy,funtastic Fred"

I cant stand him.

I just hope he hasn't sucked in the Aussie batsmen like he appears to have done to you Booney  I can't take him seriously enough to waste my precious hatred..besides, I'm saving it for the Eagles and the Crows for the football season.

I defended him early on - I hope that I at least said the jury's out - but I now consider him to be a knob of the highest order.

Whilst not defending him I think he has done the job he was picked for.
'cocksparrow' or not he's done the job so far and the Poms are into the finals with momentum.

The best reply to someone like Nixon is to ignore him. He doesn't warrant this type of discussion. Ignore him, and he will go away...

Yes, that tactic has me mystified as well. But then again, I see a number of things in contemporary sports that make no sense whatsoever. I put it down to over-paid coaches full of self importance trying to justify their existence. Keep the game simple, and you make things a lot easier for yourself.
