A concern has been that we play too much meaningless cricket. Taking into account that I believe there needs to be a form of the game, somewhere between test and T20, I would keep the 1 day format in some capacity.
How about this
*The 10 test countries are split into tier 1 and 2 depending on performance over a 2 year period.
* In each series between each country you have
- 3 tests with 6 Points for a win and 3 for a draw.
- 1 one dayer - 4 points for a win
- 3 T20's - 2 points for a win.
- each team can pick 1 wildcard t20 or 1 day game, where if they win they get double points.
The order would go something like this
Test, Test, Test, T20, T20, 1 day, T20
This gives value to each format and particularly to their chosen wildcard game, as all the points would be added together.
Teams can win each format, as normal, but accumulate points for their overall efforts over 3 formats. and they can win the series overall, maintaining interest.
- Each team would play their other tiered teams both home and away over 2 years meaning 8 series.
An Australian Summer would involve 2 teams over 2 x 3 tests, 2 X 1 1 dayers and 6 X T20's, giving each capital city a fair spread.
NOTE - an icon series against England would still be 5 tests for the Ashes.
Any thoughts and responses ?
