LEFT HAND BOWLERS

Postby mal » Fri Jan 26, 2007 4:49 pm

Why is it we hardly ever see a left hand GENUINE fast bowlers in International cricket.
Australia finally has one in Mitchell JOHNSON.
But he is the only one Ive seen play for AU
The other southpaws were meduim to meduim fast.
REID/DYMOCK/LEHMANN/WHITNEY/DELL/GILMOUR.
You might struggle ti find one in our history.

Cant remember too many for other nations as well
Wasin AKRAM comes to mind, there might be others but one
thing for sure lefthanded FAST bowlers are an extreme rarity.

Is there a reason :?:

Yes, Gilmour was a left arm bowler. He was quickish, but not quite as nippy as a Reid or a Johnson.

Reid was deceptively quick. A real shame he suffered so badly from injury. Could have been one of the greats.

Craig Matthews from WA wasn't bad a few years ago (when he could keep it on the pitch!!).

Akram is easily is the best left arm bowler i can think of. What a super player he was. Remember his hundred at Adelaide Oval when he combined with Imran. What a performance that was. He made the ton after taking 5/100 off 43 overs. He hit a six straight down the ground and back in 1989/90 that was a hit over the fence. amazing stuff. He also made a fifty in the first dig.

Totally agree, he is in my Australian team of the best players I have seen. He is my third seamer, along with Lillee and Thomson. Reid should have taken well over 300 wickets, he had sharp pace, could move the ball both ways, and had a steepling bounce which was almost unplayable.

Different six but the b@stard almost killed me when I was buying an ice-cream near the Vic Rich gates.

The ball smashed into something aluminium a few metres away from me.

Made a hell of a racket and scared the absolute sh!t outta me!

Reid should have taken well over 300 wickets

Should have.

But he broke down more than my old sh!tbox Gemini.

Poor b@stard.

I wouldn't call him "express", but Sobers could generate some good pace when he needed to.

Alan Davidson was one of Australia's best left armers.

From the TV footage I've seen he looked fairly sharp too.

Just thought of another left arm quick. Brett Schultz from South Africa. Didn't see him bowl, but apparently he was very sharp.
