Just watching the 78/79 Sydney Ashes Test on Late Night Legends on ABC2. The masses are there. Packer improved players' conditions, not the actual cricket.

It WAS the best cricket ever played, no doubt about that. I think that was because for the first time ever, all the elite talent in the world were assembled to form 3 teams. The standard from the players didn't improve, but the competition was more intense. Also, most players had already peaked prior to WSC.

It is a real shame that these matches are not recognised as 1st class matches. Players never found runs and wickets harder to come by than they did in WSC.

Actually 4 teams, if you count the Cavaliers. I think it actually destroyed the careers of a few Australians. Gary Gilmour, Martin Kent, Kerry O'Keeffe, Rob Langer - banished to provincial regions, never to be heard of again.

And certainly they didn't plunder the best of the English talent - Bob Willis and an emerging Ian Botham were bowling at Australia while the aging John Snow and Tony Greig played for the World XI.

I didn't count the Cavaliers because the side did not comprise elite talent as the other three did. Ian Botham was only breaking into Test Cricket at the time WSC was being formed. You couldn't count him as elite talent at that stage. As well as Greig and Snow, other top England players to join WSC included Amiss, Woolmer, Underwood and Knott. Useful talent I would think.

Bob Woolmer was another whose career was brought to a halt by WSC - Test centuries pre-WSC, oblivion thereafter. Dennis Amiss was a good player, but past his best by WSC. Underwood and Knott are certainly greats of the game.

Underwood was the only WSC Pom to make the 79-80 tour team the season after WSC broke up...

Knott played two tests in 81......

I don't think the others played again.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
