There's a player in D6 who is at his 9th club in 9 years.

194 games overall.. most at one club - 48.

Just had a look at the 1st 2 rounds of all the grades & there have been some big wins/losses from div 7 up to even div 3, even taking away the Gaza & Elizabeth results.

Having never been involved in SAAFL/AdFL, from afar is doesn't look like promotion/relegation is working for making the lower grades even competitions. Is there another solution to the unevenness we're seeing that wouldn't involve clubs sandbagging.

How do you measure unevenness though? When you have 6-7x the clubs of most other leagues then it’s going to occur from time to time. Even though clubs like Elizabeth, Gaza, Portland ect are getting belted right now, they won flags not long ago or featured in 2nd or 3rd weeks of finals. You could go though most country comps in SA and name at least 20-25% of the clubs who haven’t featured in at least a second semi final in the last 12-15 years.

Maybe unevenness is the wrong word to use. To me as an outsider, I assumed that promotion/relegation was the way to avoid the big margins we've seen so far this year. Is it usually this bad & I've just missed it from previous years.

The only other SA league I know of that clubs can change divisions is the HFL, but that is on a voluntary basis if a club thinks it can compete in the higher division. As we've seen both Echunga & Nairne have won flags in both divisions.

I took up the challenge of going through all country leagues for the past 13 years or as long as Sportingpulse would go. I only looked at ladder positions at the end of the seasons, not who'd played in semi finals. For competitions of 10-9 teams I did top 5, 8-7 teams top 4, 6-5 teams top 3 & 4 team competitions were top 2 only. These are the clubs that haven't played finals in the past 12-13 years

Kapunda BLGFL
Murrayville MalleeFL - finished 4th in 2012 & 13 which was a final 4 of 6 team comp
Coober Pedy Far North FL
Jamestown/Peterborough Nthn Areas FL
Bridgewater HFL Div 1 - won a flag recently in Div 2
Sedan/Cambrai HFL Div 2 - won flags recently in RIFL
Callington HFL Div 2 - won flag with Bridgewater merge
Central Augusta Spencer Gulf FL
Wirrilla West Eyre FL
Cobdogla RIFL
Blanchetown/SR RIFL- pretty sure they won flag in disbanded Lower Murray FL not too long ago
I could only find the last 2 seasons for the KNTFL but did go through individual clubs records. Kybybolite is the only club I couldn't find having played finals recently.

I think this year is the worst it's been in a long time. Generally D7 has a very lopsided division, but the rest are usually quite even.

D6 often the bottom 2-3 sides are well off the pace of the top, and the gap to D7 is large.

Unfortunately, there are a number of reasons why it's occurring this year - and perhaps just a culmination of issues / culture / change finally reaching breaking point.

If Gaza hadn't gone through what they have the last 12 months, they wouldn't be getting these results.
If Elizabeth didn't have 80% of a club walk out in the last 18 months, they wouldn't be getting these results.
If Portland didn't lose their B grade coach to Rosewater and he took a dozen, don't think they'd be getting these results.

I feel like as a competition we are about to see some significant change - the clubs that haven't put the work in over the past few years will drop off and we will end up with maybe 5-6 divisions of stronger clubs.. or rather committed clubs.

The other aspect aside from money, juniors etc is that people are just not as interested in playing anymore, or rather find it easier to have reasons to miss games or not play.

I think unless the SANFL/SACFL decide to put some serious effort/Money into bringing back footy at public school level then we are in for some pain over the next 10 years.

Another issue is the rise in weekend work compared to 20-40 years ago.

On the Fleurieu there has been an increase in hospitality/tourism weekend work and not too mention the change in shopping hours over the last 20-40 years. The kids who would become good community footballers are getting those casual weekend jobs. Some come back but others stay away living life but watching from afar.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Good on the independant schools for sticking to school footy.
Most kids still play both school and club footy keeping them in the system

There is public school footy at primary school age. The ridiculous part of it is it’s on Tuesdays after school, if both parents work full time like we do our lad can’t play school footy. Last year it was Saturday mornings and it worked a treat. He was playing Saturdays and Sundays.

Wow, yesterday was a big day! Fair to say Ingle Farm weren’t prepared for just how big! Canteen slammed and was out of food real early, BBQ no different, chef doing meals up stairs was slammed and our fridges behind the bar are almost empty.

Shout out to Salisbury for three tough games yesterday, and for helping make yesterday happen. Respectful matches played hard but without incident, and a fair sized crowd who were well behaved enjoying the day for what it was, and extend that to Mitchell Park whose women played the twilight game after. Umpires were exceptionally good in the A grade, think that makes a fair difference.

Parking was almost impossible to come by.

Feel like I’ve been on a 3 day bender was so hectic yesterday.. left the club 11:30 last night - Eastern Park lads were still in their drinking our fridge dry

Looking forward to a weekend off.

Unbelievable work here. Love it. So good for the community to come together on Anzac Day. Massive respect to all involved.

Big shout out to the EPFC boys as well. Doing great things on and off the field. The Coach and a bunch of his players were at the Elizabeth RSL Dawn Service paying their respects and then putting away pints from 7.30am. That's a big day if they are still going at 11.30 that night.

Holistically though this is what we should all be doing. drinking at each others clubs, supporting the opposition at away games and welcoming all in to the club rooms after beating the piss out of each other on the field. Why pay $12-18 for a beer at a pub or in town when you have a sip for $6 and help clubs stay afloat. If we all did more of this our Grassroots community clubs would benefit greatly.

Average looking sling tackle 2nd quarter EP v Lutheran. Could be a holiday then the follow up by a different player of push on Lutheran water runner. Lutheran water runner definitely first to make contact so be interesting to see if league take any action. I'm sure if Lutheran bloke had concussion from tackle that they will send in a medical report like they usually do to make it seem worse. 31.20 mark on dartfish.

Not sure there is much in it (sling tackle), but geez old mate from EP (is that nugget?) clearly seeing if the player is ok and has one bloke get in his face then the water boy push him, could've got out of control if the player was and aggressive person.. rule #1 for a water boy, don't go touching oppo players.

Sling tackle definitely didn’t look bad but probably has a case to answer for if they are trying to stamp it out of the game, he’s the smallest bloke in the field as well and only real young so he’s been pretty stressed since.. Yeah the water boy gave nugget a decent shove, video doesn’t do it justice at all but the umpire only pinged us and seen both incidents just thinks there was “nothing in it” when the water boy put his hands on one of our players! Dont expect much else from the umpires in this grade to be fair

Ladder after Round 3
6 - Eastern Park
6 - Salisbury
4 - Fitzroy
4 - Ingle Farm
4 - St Paul's OS
----------------------
2 - Houghton
2 - Rosewater
2 - Adelaide Lutheran
0 - Central United
0 - Elizabeth

Round 4
Houghton v Adelaide Lutheran
Salisbury v Rosewater
Eastern Park v Ingle Farm
Elizabeth v Fitzroy
Central United v St Paul's

Interesting round of games coming up, in fact interesting ladder - when you look at the results each week there are massive blowouts, yet there is only one win between 3rd and 9th. Assuming Eastern Park continue on their big wins this weekend, Ingle Farm will likely find themselves outside the 5 come Saturday afternoon.

Fitzroy after a small hiccup round 1 will be sitting comfortably in 3rd place, whilst you'd have to think Salisbury and Eastern Pk will remain a 1 game buffer.

Houghton v Lutheran shapes as an interesting clash - despite losing the 1st two games by an average 135 points, if the Raiders win they'll be in the top 5, two in a row and some momentum with a month of winnable games to come.

Just think, if Brighton didn't return to AdFL in 2017, Eastern Park would've been in D3 with a strong squad.. probably would've still been around that mark.

They've been unlucky really..

2017 - promoted to D3, stayed down due to Brighton coming in.
2018 - relegated from D4 after being docked premiership points for a suspension. Finished with 9 wins and 1 game out the 5.
2019 - missed finals in D5 on percentage
2020 - covid half year, won 3 lost 6.
2021 - strong season, lost the last game of the minor round to miss top spot and finished 4th, before being beaten by Pooraka in the Prelim
2022 - finals in a strong div featuring Lockleys, Heccies, Gepps, Kilburn and CLG - one of those clubs now D3, another 3 in D4.
2023 - Relegated with 2 wins averaging 76 PPG - the 7th best attack - lost games by 2pts, 9pts, 11pts, 12pts, 14pts, 19pts
