Exactly, the real skill is knowing when to be in the right place at the right time

FFS, at this level if you have half a brain and half know how to read the game you can be an absolute porker and succeed. People have been doing it for decades.

Correct, but its not just at this level, it's universal.

Plenty of super fit footballers at AFL fail because they cant kick or couldn't read the play if Dr Suess translated it for them.

If they couldn't kick or read the play I'm pretty sure they wouldn't make it to AFL level. Thats what the combine is for

Yes you need to be skillfull and fitness alone aint gonna get the job done. And yes you can be overweight and still play at a decent level i should know coz ive always carried extra kilos, but if you look at the grand final not one player was overweight so that must be saying something about the level of fitness that is reauired nowdays.

We're talking extremes, of course you need to be fit enough to physically cope with the rigours of the game - and those rigours are obvisouly more arduous the higher up the standard is. I guess my point was more along the lines of football IQ can compensate for a lack of fitness a lot of the time - at all levels.

And yeah I was probably harsh on Kane Mitchell, hes a 2000x better footballer than I'll ever be. But he was super fit, super dedicated, a great team mate... and couldn't cut it because his under pressure football intelligence and skill level wasn't adequate.

Overall - just being "fitter" isn't the silver bullet and shit side panacea that so many coaches and administrators think it is.

Depends what position you play in regards to fitness levels too - take Smithfield for example, they had Bellman, Jamie Lane, Nisbet - wouldn't say they were the fittest blokes going around, but they were important to their success.

Just quietly old mate Mickey Gollan wouldn't have been able to jog a lap.

... but was a huge part of winning Smithfield the Preliminary final Vs Lockleys - who interestingly looked much fitter.

Almost all the anecdotal evidence supports what I am saying. It's just such an ingrained "truth" among the footballing punditry that fitness is hyper important. Ye Olde "we've always done it this way" rings true.
