APRA License

Do football clubs need to pay for an 'APRA License for background music'?

Would have thought not-for-profit organisations would be exempt, but seems APRA are doing a sweeping target of sports clubs to raise revenue.

Very serious.

I believe they hit up Modbury Sporting Club recently and wanted to back-date the fees.

We do, or at least we used to, presume it still happens.

Spoke with APRA recently on playing Music along with Sponsor and Club promos, at Half Time of Home Games - a flat yearly fee of $67 was indicated, because Amateur Clubs don't charge spectators/patrons to enter the grounds. IMO Royalties to Artists, is a fair thing and $67 seemed reasonable as a yearly fee.

I'm sure Elton John would be stoked collecting his $67 from the Kenilworth Football Club.

Dont know if its changed but at one time I can definately tell you business' had to pay a fee to have the radios on in. We owned a garage several years ago and for memory it cost $31 a year back then to have the radio on in the customers waiting room.

We pay the annual fee. Have been for a very long time now. Can't believe some clubs have got away with not paying it.

I have never of heard of this?
So to get this right my wife is in a band called The Bluff (cheap plug for all you guys that like 70s and 80's rock) and if I were to book them at our club, the club needs to have an APRA license whatever that is?

No they would need an Entertainment licence from the liquor licencing mob. However, if they were to play recordings of artists/bands that are member of APRA, they should pay an APRA fee and display the little sticker you get sent.

My old man was secretary of the EFC back in the late 80s/early 90s and I remember this being an issue way back then.
In fact, I remember serious concern due to APRA's licencing costs from then, as well.
And, they did bust clubs. From the discussions that took place, I remember that several other local clubs were fined.
