What's the ruling?

Went to the Gepps Cross v Rostrevor game yesterday and was staggered to see a Gepps player (jed Fiorvanti I think it was) red carded and then allowed to return to the field 10 minutes later.

The incident was a relatively minor one (late to the contest) and was only really worthy of a 25/50m penalty and maybe a 10 min sit down but when the umpire sent him off he flashed the red card. Always thought that meant he was off for the rest of the game but as I said earlier he returned to the field 10 minutes later.

What is the definitive ruling?

Ps: Not complaining as I am a Gepps Cross supporter.

That's what I got told yesterday too but surely a red card should mean you are off for the rest of the game.

Jed? Seriously?

For a red card it's initally 10 mins but umpire has the ability to send the player off for any time he sees fit, including the remainder of the game.

It appears the umpires have had some serious communication breakdowns all season. Maybe they should all get together and learn the laws of football firstly then have a go at the rules & regs of the SAAFL.
Embarrassing for someone to say the least

My understanding of the rule is that the umpire is to advise the I/C steward if the player CAN go back on after 10 minutes. I am lead to believe this did not happen therefore the player was able to go back on and it was confirmed by not only the Gepps timekeeper/steward but also the ROCS t/keeper that this did not occur. No argument if the umpire failed to execute his duty correctly.
